First time poster here.

My dad bought my son a Fender DG-7 at an auction. He paid $100 for it which I thought was too much and once I got a close look at it, I was sure it was too much.

The fretboard looked dried out and I noticed that the bridge was starting to come up as well. It still kept a tune so I thought I would buy some strings and some lemon oil and mess around with it. As soon as I took the strings off, the tuning nut, the bridge, and the bridge nut all fell off. They look to be in fine condition other than that. There is also a slight bow below the bridge. This thing obviously was stored in the Mojave Desert.

Anyway, I am still determined to get it back to being playable anyway so I was wondering what type of glue I should use to glue the bridge and the nuts back on. I don't know much about being a luthier, but I am an accomplished carpenter so I think I should be able to use some glue and a few clamps.

Any help would be much appreciated and thanks in advance.

Eric

Welcome! I do not have any advice but to post your question on the "The Forum Lounge" as it gets more traffic. Good luck with the guitar.

To my knowledge the only thing that actually needs to be glued on is the wooden bridge that holds the bridge nut and pins (if its a pin bridge). The bridge nut (I think you mean saddle) should not be glued in as it needs to be removable without much effort should the guitar ever need a set up.

I've read different things about nuts, I will say that the last time I had all of the strings off of my 30 year old F-35 I found out that the nut was being held in only by the tension of the strings. I left it as is, put new strings on and no problems.

As for what type of glue to use I can only suggest that you try hitting this link:

There are a ton of guitar repair and building videos on YouTube. Be warned they are addictive.

Good luck.

Hi Erock and welcome to the forum. SOme sort of titebond wood glue will do for your bridge and zach is correct about the saddle, don't glue it.

My concern is the bow on the soundboard under the bridge. That indicates that your bracing has probably come unstuck and although it is possible to keep playing like this it will affect the intonation terribly. Re-gluing bracing is a pretty big job and does require quite a bit of preparation and the, ahem, balls to pull the guitar apart............ and it will take some time too.

check out this guy for a general description of the process.

It's pretty similar to what you are needing.

You can check the bracing with a small mirroe to see if the top has come away. I actually have a friend who had an acoustic with a bow below the bridge. WHen he looked it was actually the bracing that was warped but still stuck to the top. He soaked the top and piled a couple of wet towels and then a load of heavy books on top and left it for a couple of weeks...... .....I don't recommend it but it worked for him!!!!!

SOmetimes just taking off the strings and leaving it for a few days can let the body 'settle' again but it does need properly addressed.

You know your woodwork so try it yourself. If you take that to a luthier you will probably be charged far more than the guitar is actually worth.

Have fun with it and keep us in the loop with what you do with it.

Even a picture blog of your work.....we like guitar porn on here!!!! :D :D
