All,

I've been looking at the FR50C Resonator and got to play one in a music store. It looks like a great offering for a resonator, but I have a few concerns.

1. The action was very high on the guitar, presumably for slide playing. While I am interested mostly in using it with a slide, I am worried that the really high action will make chords and other fingering really hard. :? Also, it appears that lowering the action would be a permanent modification to the guitar. Is this right? The action was higher than I needed for sliding anyway, so I'd like it lower - but it worries me to make a change that is hard to reverse.

2. When I hear recordings of resonators playing slide, I hear a sort-of buzzy twangy quality that I really like. But I don't seem to get that quality when I play any resonators (including the FR50CE). Seems to me that sound really makes the rural swamp blues sound! Is that a matter of technique that I must learn? Or is there some other trick to getting that sound?

Thanks much for any reply.

/Mark

I own the FR-48 reso. My action is about 3.8mm (0.15inches) at the 12th fret. That's much higher than my other acoustics and my electrics, but I can still finger chords and notes easily. The good thing is I can fret notes behind the slide to make 7th and minor chords with the slide. Check the neck, maybe the truss rod needs adjusting. Otherwise I believe you would have to alter the saddle to lower the action.

As far as tone goes, the FR-50 is a spider resonator. The FR-48 is a biscuit. I have found that spiders have a sweeter, more acoustic-guitar like tone while the biscuit resos have that traditional delta blues tone. I happen to prefer biscuits. I suggest that you track down an FR-48 or similar biscuit resonator to compare the tone.

I have an FR-50, Aluminum Cone, Spider Bridge job. What make it an FR-50 "C"?

Oh, the one with the tele looking pick up, those are nice. I'd love to add one of those to my collection.

By the way, I have a bottle of 2 Buck Chuck in my kitchen.

6 months ago I picked up a FR50CE. My only complaint is that I don't have enough songs in my bag to use it a lot, so now I'm taking lessons. What I've found is that you want the action high enough to be able to use a slide, yet low enough to fret. The factory setting on mine fit the bill pretty well.

I went with this option to be able to plug in to my amp, should the mood strike. Playing unplugged is plenty loud, so don't feel like you'll be giving anything up.

My question is, last night I broke a string, playing with different tunings. Any suggestions on replacements?
