Hi I just bought a new Fender California Sonoran™ SCE and my friend noticed a gap between the stings near the lower neck and said something is not right here.

Is the gap between the fret board and the stings is normal? This is near the opening lower fret board.

He said that this gap was more than any other guitars he has played on . . . I am now worried!

Please help . . .

Maybe I'm just not understanding but is the gap the height of the strings from the fretboard? Or is it the gap between two of the strings.

Sorry more clarification is needed on your question.

If I'm understanding you correctly than the distance between the strings and the fretboard is called the "action."

In order to change it there are a few different things that can be done, sanding the bridge saddle (the plastic piece the strings sit on in the bridge), sanding the nut (the plastic piece that the strings sit on at the the headstock) or adjusting the neck with the truss rod.

Now any/all of those things can be done individually, or all of them can be done together depending on where the issue is on the guitar. You need to find a quality luthier (guitar repair guy) that you can trust. Than you and him can discuss your options. He should be able to tell you if there's a bow in the neck which may account for some high spots in the action, or low. And if the neck is straight but the action is still high than sanding on the nut or saddle may be needed. The key is to find a guy you can trust, ask other guitar players you know and see if they can recommend someone. I'm very lucky to have just such a guy very close to me who charges reasonable $$ and does excellent work.

And by the way, I oversimplified this explanation just to be clear since I'm not clear on what you do or don't know about the names of the different guitar parts. Basically, no offense intended if I told you something you already know.

Good luck, I hope this helps you out.

I believe I am seeing the same issue. To clarify this condition by putting a capo on the 1st fret and measure from the top of the 12th fret to the bottom of the 6th string. This will give you where the action is currently set at. You can also measure the same way for the 1st string. Originally I had set my fender up for 5/64 for at the 6th string and 3/64 at the 1st string. Recently I notice a difference in the action. I am now seeing a little more than 7/54 on the 6th string and a little more than 5/64 for the 1st string. Adjusting the truss rod has no affect on this. When sighting down the neck; that's from the head stock toward the body you can see that the neck is bending up right at the point where the neck joins the body.

If any one has a solution for problem or know what the causing this please let me know.

Thanks for your response WI this is exactly my issue "the distance between the strings and the fret board is called the "action." I feel that there is too much gap between the stings and the fret board and I will take it to some professional guy to repair it.

Someone told me that this gap should be the same through out the body from bottom neck to head. I will try and upload a picture of what I am talking about.

Thank you on again much appreciated.

You're welcome, I'm glad I could offer some useful info for you.

And yes, you're right, the gap should be the same all the way if the guitar is properly adjusted, at least that's what I was told.

And just cuz I'm interested, post what is done to it to get things right, if it's the neck of sanding of the bridge saddle or nut.
