The Montara, it's like a long dead project that Fender has forgotten about. I first tried one at a GC in Chicago but didn't have the coin at the time, and later bought one from Ebay for $250 including a hard case.

The drawbacks I know of are 1-the electronics in it are kind of weak, 2-the battery access through the soundhole which is cumbersome, and 3-the original cord jack is in the body strap button making it awkward to set in most guitar stands. Soundwise acoustically it may be a little thin on the bass side due to the small body but the strat neck has a great feeling.

When I first got it I also struggled to find info on it from Fender, no one seemed to know anything about it, like it was a "never-was." After several attempts I finally got this back.

Model Name: Montara (Black)
Model Number: 094-5706-000
Series: CALIFORNIA - SERIES
Source: Japan/Korea
Body Style: Downsized single cutaway with convex back
Top: Spruce
Back and Sides: Mahogany
Neck: Mahogany
Fingerboard: Rosewood
Scale Length: 25.3" (643mm)
No. Of Frets: 22
Machine Heads: Chrome diecast
Bridge: Rosewood
Electronics: Ceramic pickup with volume control and 3-band EQ, Treble, Mid, Bass
Finish: Gloss
Colors: Black
Unique Features: Strat style headstock
Snowflake position marker inlays
U.S. MSRP: $575 to $695
Introduced: 1990
Discontinued: 1992
This info is pretty identical for all the colors, Black, Sunburst, Maple and Natural.

Anyway, after I got it the pickup went out and I had the electronics replaced with a new Dean system. At the same time the luthier replaced the original plastic nut and saddle with "bone" ones. The guitar was super comfortable to play anyway and those improvements made it even better. I play it live with our band on occasion and in our church group with great results, in fact one of the other guitarists had to use it one day when his Ovation acoustic crapped out and he liked it so much he bought one on Ebay. He also had to upgrade the electronics so that may be something to watch out for with this model.

Below is a photo of mine. Like I said I've had to do some upgrading but it is really a great guitar. The overall look is improved by the headstocks painted to matched the body, and the contoured body makes it comfortable to play. I'd recomend one if you have the $$. If you look back some time in the forums there are at least two other people who discuss how much they like theirs too.

Wow I got long winded there but I hope that helps!
