Hi benmeelan, welcome to the forum. So is it an electro acoustic or just a plain acoustic guitar? What do you want to play, country, bluegrass, blues, rock, pop ballads, or a little bit of everything? Do you want to do bends, play slide or just strum chords with a little occasional solo? I have used D'Addario EJ16 Phosphor Bronze for many years and I like them, but I occasionaly switch to another brand or another gauge to explore new stuff. The EJ16 are called "light" because of their gauge .012 .016 .024 .032 .042 .053. You will have to try a few brands and gauges for yourself anyway, so you could start with the EJ16 and explore the possibilities of other stuff. Good luck.

Dear Ben,

If you're starting out learning on a acoustic, it's good to get the extra light strings for acoustic (i.e., 4 wound and 2 solid) to make it easier on the fingers. If it's a nylon string same concept, use the lightest strings possible.

You may get more satisfaction with extra light strings vs. others, because its easier to hold down the strings, and you'll see more progress faster. When you get comfortable with the extra light, work up to the .12s or the lights.

Also, don't pay a lot for the strings.
Some online stores have great deals for strings. Some sets go for about $2-$3. And, get a set of genuine Fender picks while your at it they will come in handy someday.

Good luck.
