Hi there!

I've posted this particular question earlier on this forum, but I have not obtained any help yet :( So I would like to try again :D

Who has already tried the new 2010 Villager 12-string acoustic? Is it worth buying?

I own original 1967 Villager and Shenandoah, so I'm thinking of fulfilling my collection with their 'younger brother'.

Thanks!

As far as I can see, I'm the only guy on this forum who has bought this guitar. Yesterday I took it home from the post office in my neighborhood.

It's a wonderful guitar. Shiny, glassy and warm sound. Tons and tons of 'vintage vibe'. Low action, comfortable neck.

Highly recommend this item to everyone.

Though the 2010 Villager looks like 1967 Shenandoah, these guitars do barely have anything in common.

I'm really jonzing for this guitar. You are the only person I've even heard of that has one. Could you post a video or a detailed review. It seems the whole internet is dead on this beautiful guitar. Thanks!

Unfortunately, I cannot do the video now, but I'll post a review instead.

Lucky for you then that the original Shenandoahs cost about the same as the new villager on the secondary market. Then you don't have to have the electronics or cutaway.

I'm still waiting for a detailed review. I think by Christmastime I'll be the owner of one of these beautiful guitars.

Hello again!

I've been away for a while, so I couldn't write a review a month ago. But now I will try to fulfill this gap. As I told earlier, I have no ability of making videos right now, so I will try to explain everything in word.

First, let me remind you the specs: solid spruce top, laminated mahogany back and sides, glued in maple neck, rosewood fretboard, vintage 'kluson-style' tuners with plastic keys, Fishman Isys preamp with tuner.

A. The sound. This guitar is closer to modern Fender Sonorans from California series, rather than to original Fender Shenandoahs and Villagers especially. So, if you want to form an opinion about this guitar without playing it, you can fully dwell on Fender Sonoran video demos.

This 2010 Villager has very sharp jangly sound, even downtuned. I tune all my guitars one step below and use 12-54 gauge strings. However, like many acoustic Fenders, it lacks depth of the sound. But if you don't need it, or if you want just a jangle machine, go for this guitar for sure. I suppose, though I haven't tried, that this guitar due to it's tone will
easily cut through the mix, plugged or unplugged.

B. Comfort of playability & action This guitar has 45 mm zero fret width, though original Shenandoah and Villager have 42 mm. As far as I can see/feel, both vintage and modern versions have the same neck profile - 'C'. I find 42 mm Shenandoah/Villager/Coronado/Electric XII necks more convenient to me, but 45 mm - that's just standard measurement for a 12-string acoustic. So, if you are used to playing 12-string, you will face no problems. The action is low, you may need some truss rod adjustment work to be done, but that's just nothing at all.

C. Quality of manufacturing. Very fine, especially for a Chinese instrument. The top is fine grained, both sides of it match each other very well. The neck is made of fine maple: peghead and fretboard are made of solid piece of wood, the three-piece heel is glued. Those 'kluson-style' tuning machines seem to me less stiff, that the ones found on vintage guitars. Anyway, you can always upgrade your guitar with any tuning machines you desire.

D. Overall. Nice guitar, highly recommended for those people who search for inexpensive and reliable acoustics, and for collectors especially.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Sincerely,
Peter.

I just purchased a Villager yesterday, and I think it is great. In fact, this is the first Fender acoustic I have owned. I own a Washburn 12-string, which this one will replace, and an old Danelectro electric 12-string, and I think this guitar will fit nicely in my collection.

The tone is great and the action very low for a 12-string, makes for easy playing. It sounds as good as a Martin 12-string, at a fraction of the price.

I'd recommend it for anyone looking for a good, reasonably priced 12-string acoustic/electric

You know, I haven't heard anything of Martin from this guitar, though I can agree, CD-140-12 sounds like Martin, indeed.

Hi guys,
I bought a Villager 2010 in Glasgow, Scotland, in December. I was on a mission to get a 12 string, and it was not going to be my "main" guitar, so I didn't want to pay too much. I tried quite a few different models in a few shops, and although I was just a little put off by the looks, the Villager was by far the nicest and most comfortable to play, so I ended up going for it. Since then I have totally fallen in love with it. The neck is a dream - low action, wonderfully comfortable and inviting to play.
I would agree with the comment about lack of bottom end when played acoustic, but I don't find that a problem. I haven't tried it through a PA yet, but I have done some recording with it, and the sound is great, whether through a mike or DI.
Like I said, I am loving this guitar - it's the one I'm reaching for first when I go to play, and I'm finding new ways to play songs I've been playing for years, so I would certainly recommend it for the price - I paid just over £300, and I'm very happy with it.

I brought a used Villager a few months ago, I thought it was new. I was not looking for it. I play with many large groups of acoustic musicians and most of them play guitar. There can be 10 to 30 guitars at a session. I decided to go back and play banjo again. My friend gave me a beautiful 100 year old tenor banjo that needed new machine tuners. After I put 200 plus into it. I realized I couldn't do Chicago blues tuning in it so I traded it in at a vintage music shop. I saw the Villager there, played her and brought it.

My main reason for the purchase was I wanted to be able to musically standout and hear myself play. I was playing higher on the neck than most in 2nd and 3rd inversion chord positions, not the root chords.

The Villager is my 3rd 12 string guitar of which my first was a full sized F 2-12 Guild.

The Villager has a full, rich sound with a 10 gauge set of strings. She pretty much stays in tune execpt with fast temp. changes. The built in pre-amp and turner works great. There is only one small, little problem that rarely affect me. It is a slight buzz on the low E strings 2nd fret when playing and most people don't notice it even when they are playing her.

I love to share my instruments and with my Villager everybody loves it. They can't believe how easy it is to play, and I agree the action is almost like my electric guitars.

As for an investment I normally would not have considered her, but for the price she plays as well if not better than the other high end instruments.
