I wish I had purchased a Fender. Instead, I got one of those collectors edition Esteban midnight moon guitars. To me it was built poorly. It has a lot of scratches that came straight from the factory and stuff. Also, when i go to strum, the 5 string vibrates erratically. I'm pretty intested in purchasing a new fender acoustic-electric. Anyone have any suggestions?

If its new from QVC or the like, just return it.. As far a Fender acoustics go, I would like to have the "Kingman" 10 Although I don't own one, I have played that model and I really like it.

For those that have been caught by the zorro guitar hawker i sympathize with you. I used to own one and almost had to pay someone to buy it from me. Return it if you can and buy a Takamine or Fender solid top for pretty near the same money.

I recently picked up a '68 Palomino that I fell in love with. I know there's many Fender aficionados who think the Palomino isn't worth the money at just about any price, but I got to tell you the tap tone on this baby is unbelievable and the whole guitar vibrates right up through the neck when played.

Granted that my 15 year old takamine eg-10 may sound better in terms of what an acoustic "should" sound like, but the folks at Fender who put together the Palomino (and Kingman) were no slouches. After 40 years the Palomino sounds good, is super fun to play and is almost bullet-proof. I have no issues taking it out of the studio and I'm pretty sure that I could play the hell out of it for another 40 years and it will just sound better.

You should never buy a guitar without playing it first. My suggestion is that you go to respectable guitar stores and try out guitars until you find the one you like at a price you can afford.

This is the best advice anyone can give you. Every instrument is different - even the same model. I have played two guitars that were the same model and both played differently. And once you have purchased the guitar.... have it professionally set-up ... it will cost you about $40 and will be the best money you spend. No matter what guitar I buy, I always have a bone nut put into it. A bone nut with a set-up should cost about $65-$75.

If you are new to guitars, find someone (not a salesman) who can provide some advice. I don't care how good a sales person is...... they still have a vested interest in selling you a guitar.... any guitar.... and they probably sell more guitars to people who won't be back to their store and who will probably put that guitar up on Craigslist in 6 months. So do you really think they care whether you are really happy. Hey... even I have made some guitar purchases that weren't well advised and I am learning every day.

No offense to Fender.... and I realize this is the Fender Forum..... and I owned a Fender acoustic from the early 90's. It was okay, but they are known for their electrics and amps. I would probably look into Fender's other brands for an acoustic. Guild has always made nice acoustics. You should look around at other makers who are known for acoustic guitars. ie: Epiphone, Seagull, Art & Luthier (I like A&L ). Get on-line and learn about tone woods. This is important knowledge to have when learning about acoustics - just Google "Tone Woods" and learn away.

Maybe even find an old Gibson.... My son and I found a 1962 Gibson LG-0 on Craigslist for $30 last summer. We had to put $250 into repairing it (bone nut, replaced plastic bridge with rosewood bridge with a bone saddle and had the guitar set-up).... Its a great little guitar. LG stands for Learner's Guitar. So this isn't necessarily a collectable, its a player's guitar. All solid wood... All mahogany. The lesson here is that you can find great guitars at reasonable prices. Here's the LG-0 with the repaired bridge.....

When you play the guitar you should be able to feel it vibrate all over the body and neck... even the headstock.

Overall..... make sure you're happy with the guitar and have fun.

Very nice LG-O. It looks to be in very good condition.

Anyway, I agree, an acoustic is a personal thing, they all sound and feel different. Try the guitars out before you purchase, it will give you a range of styles and feel for the one you want as well as what feels good and sounds good and what does not. Take your time, make it a treause hunt. If you feel intimidated in a guitar store, DON'T we all had to start playing at some point in our lives. and not everyone will be able to play like Estaban.

happy hunting.

Any of the Walden guitars are very nice for the money. Got some more dough? Grab any Fender Ensenada Series model. TREMENDOUS bang for the buck!

I have a Kingman 10 and love it. I bought it about nine months ago. The action is a little high but no worries yet. I need to take it in for an adjustment. I hear this is common. It comes with a nice case as well. Best wishes for whatever you get--just enjoy it.
