Sadly I cannot recommend a Fender. As much as I love the Strat and Tele I've never liked any of their acoustics.

You can never go wrong with a Martin.

I can recommend the California Series..the Malibu SCE seems like a really nice guitar. I have the Sonoran SCE and I'm pleased with it.

:)

"Best" guitar comes down to personal choice in the end, I think. My dad played a fender for years that he loved. I inherited it and still pick it up now and then. The neck is a bit thick for me. My dad, however, liked the extra leverage it gave him for bar chords. I don't have the same experience with that guitar though, so that's why I say it comes down to personal choice. We all have different needs and preferences.

I frankly don't know enough about the newer Fender acoustics to comment about them. Fender, of course, makes very nice guitars.

Takamines are favored today, and I like mine ok. But my favorite at the moment is my Ibanez with cutaway body. The Ibanez cost a bit over $700 with a hard shell case thrown in. What I like most about it is the slim neck, with the strings hugging the fretboard all the way down the neck, great for plucking out melody lines anywhere on the neck.

For what my advice might be worth, I recommend trying various guitars out, test how they feel, and choose one that responds the way you like it.

Four great brands have been mentioned in this thread so far:
Fender
Martin
Takamine
Ibanez

For $600 you can get a very nice Morgan Monroe a/e with humicase and still have enough left over for a small acoustic amp. I must vouch for Takamine though. I own two and they are great. Seagull s6 and Carvin cobalt also are quality acoustics that get great reviews. I think an acoustic should be played before bought though so you might want to visit a music shop and try as many as you can to be sure the tone, feel and playability is good for you.

Yep, trying various guitars is the thing to do. I enjoy playing a friend's Ibanez, but I like my Takamine. I need to take a closer look at Fenders.

I'm a beginner and this will be my first try at acoustics, I've been looking at 2 specifically.
A Yamaha FG700S Folk Acoustic Guitar- One site said it was good for beginners.
Epiphone Limited Edition Hummingbird Artist Acoustic Guitar -Not sure what level this one is.

Which one you guys suggest for a newb? :D

When I first started out, any guitar I could get my hands on was good for this newbie. The first one that I had constant access to had strings 1/2 inch off the fretboard--a bit of exaggeration, but maybe you get the point.

Either the Yamaha or Epiphone are probably fine to get started on. In the early 1970s I had an Epiphone I enjoyed, but I lost it in a fire. And for years I played a Yamaha classical guitar.

Today my main guitars are a Fender acoustic which I have had for years and an Ibanez.

I would say, just get started on something. After you have played for a while you will have a much better idea of what you want in order to make the kind of music you want to make.

Be sure to take a good look at the Fenders available today.

Walden, Walden, and Walden would be a great choice. For $600 clams you don't even have to piss around with a laminated wood model, although I hear theirs are really something nice. Walden necks are on the thin and flat side and so are good to learn on. Get yourself a Supranatural Series D series (dreadnought) or G Series (Grand Auditorium). Ebay has them for around $500 or less, shipped, and with a nice enough hsc. You can always sell it for what you paid. Read the reviews on these at Harmony Central.

No, I'm not affiliated with Walden in any way other than owning a couple of their guitars in the past.

I might also suggest the SOLID WOOD Ensenada Series Fender. Again the ESD dread or the ESV 000 models.

Have fun!
