I have been playing guitar for about 2 to 3 months now. I really enjoy playing my Kingman 10. I check the humidifier often during the dry winter. Now that spring is here the humidity is getting higher. So, I am wondering if there is a humidity level or range for a Kingman 10? For any acoustic guitar? Thanks everyone.

I believe 40-70 percent is the generally accepted range to be in.

Thank you for the information. Do you know if there is an inexpensive device out there so I could check the humidity in a house or hotel room. I travel a lot and take my guitar as much as possible. Thanks again.

Honestly, I had a humidifier in my guitar, which was inside the guitar case for the first 6 months or so of owning my acoustic. It honestly doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Maybe it matters more for expensive guitars, but I paid around $200 for my Fender acoustic, and I've had it for years. Only thing I've had to do was have the neck set up, and of course strings changed regularly.

There is a product out there called "Guitar Breath" which looks like a round disc of plastic that fits over the sound hole of the guitar. The working part is a round platter of gel that you soak in water, then squeeze out. Placing it in the plastic holder, then in the sound hole, is supposed to do two things: Relieve humidity, and provide humidity (when dry air is present).

I'm not too sure how well it works. I tried it for a few months, but now I pretty much leave my guitars alone. They are inexpensive--however, if you have a significant investment in instruments, it might be worth looking into.

Jason:

Unfortunately, I think the only place it is available is in Japan, (which is where I got it). I was surprised by that. I thought it was more widely available.

The shop I bought it in was Shimamura Music. http://www.shimamura.co.jp/index2.html

The one sheet that came with it has no website address, only a telephone and fax number: 03-5911-0611 / 03-3986-3131 fax

Finally, you can run a search on Google and there is a link for it to be purchased through rakuten.net (which is a mail order service).

I hope this information helps.

I travel quite a bit too - and was thinking about one of those small humidifiers (look at "travel humidifier" without the quotes on Amazon, the ones with no tank, they use bottled water!) for hotel rooms.

They look downright *tiny* though. Has anyone tried one? I'm just wondering if they'd actually have any kind of noticeable effect on a small hotel room, or if they're just a waste of money!

Thanks :D

What affect does high or low humidity have on the guitar?

Any idea on what range of humidity this device kept the guitar?

There is an American product made by Kyser in Texas (I think) which is similiar or the same as the Japanese made one. It's a rubber/latex/synthetic disk with a substance (sponge?) that you immerse in water, then, wring out the excess and fits in the sound hole.
It costs about $20.00 and should be easily available at any guitar/music
store.I use them myself in my Fenders,Gibsons.........hope this helps :)

Frank: Yup! Sounds exactly similar.

rwt: I'm not sure how well it worked or what the relative humidity was in/around the guitar. But I know the air can get hella dry here in the winter, so having some moisture around it must have helped.
