I'm just getting started. I have steel strings on my Fender F-35. Are nylon string better and more forgiving to the fingers? If so do you sacrifice and tone? Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,

Your guitar probably came with 12s. What I did was switch to 11s and keep the phosphor bronze strings. I didnt want to switch to nylons. What I did do was practice in intervals and within a couple of weeks my fingers were toughened up pretty good. Practice and have fun!

Welcome to the forum Bob. I'm not too sure you could use nylons on your F35 because of the bridge type unless they make nylon strings with a ball end for peg holes. Just try a lighter guage string with an ennamel coating like Elixer polywebs or Ernie Ball coated and they should be easier on your fingers. Good luck.

And if you go to a lighter gauge, consider taking the instrument to a tech and having them lower the bridge and maybe tweak the torque rod to lower the overall action.

Just passing through, know it's been a while since you asked the question. But really the answer you need, and I'm surprised no one else mentioned this, what you need is just more playing time, or practice,to build up the calluses on the fingertips.. Once you have those the string won't matter. Nylon is for classical style guitars, music that requires a different tone than say folk or blues.
I've had two F-35's I still miss the first one, bought it new back in 72 for around $150, stupidly loaned it to someone that had the nerve to trade it off, he offered me a $20 piece of junk made in Mexico, suitable only for a wall hanging, as a replacement. Never mind he also traded off the even older hardshell case for the Fender 12 string I once had. Some people have no sense of worth.
The F-35 was, is, also a great guitar for slide.
