Hi, I've just bought a California series La Brea electro-accoustic. It is in fantastic, mint condition and I'm told that it is about 15 years old. Can anyone tell me when and where were these produced, and any other interesting information.
Thanks, tetley

I have only seen those on Evil-bay, never one in person, but they look very cool.

I had a pretty tough time getting any info on my Montara so good luck on your La Brea. Seems that once these are not manufactured any longer that the info on them gets lost. I'm not being critical but when I contacted Fender regarding any info on my Montara it was as if they'd never heard of it. Seems that some info would be on file somewhere. They finally got me some basic specs so I know mine was made in the 90-92 era sometime.

Cool guitar, post some photos of it if you can. What color is it?

Hi WI KISSfan,
Thanks for your reply.
I've since found out that this model was produced in Korea between 1990 and 1995 and colour is apparently categorised as Maple, despite the spruce top ! There was a also a "natural" finish version, which had spruce top and mahogany back and sides. The maple finish is apparently rare here in England as most of the imports were black.
Otherwise you're quite right - it's hard to find information.

Dating depends on color. These were manufactured in Korea from '87 to '92 for part of the Fender "California Series". No exact serial number dating, but Fender website gives the range of dates above for the black finish. Other finishes fall into the same range give or take a few years. No longer in production. Typically have Fender "piezo" electronics. The fingerboard is a Fender "C" shape. Here are some specs on one I purchased used:

Overall length = 41 1/2"
Nut to bridge length = 25 3/4"
Body width at top = 11 3/4"
Body width at waist = 11"
Body width at bottom = 15 3/4"
Neck width at nut = 1 11/16"
Neck width at 12th fret = 2 1/16"
Action at 12th fret = 1/8"

Reviews are typically very good for this guitar (some mixed). Much nicer then the newer Stratacoustics/Telecoustics because of the better body--therefore the acoustic sound is much better. Yet, not as good as the old Wildwood acoustics.

Here is a link to some reviews: http://reviews.harmony-central.com/revi ... aBrea/10/1[/quote]

I have two vintage Fender La Brea's. One is a maple finish and one is the standard black finish. Does anyone know where I could get the electonics for the La Brea? Does anyone know what type of electronics system they used? They have the volume and tome knobs on top of the body.
