Gibson acoustics please. I dont get it. I was in GC playing some and I think the $300 Fenders sound just as good (well, BAD) as the Gibsons did. Boy when I picked up any $500 or over Martin or Taylor the difference was crystal clear. I love their electrics but man they cant make acoustics worth a damn if you ask me.

I don't know anyone that likes the Gibson or the Fender acoustics. Martin seems to be the premier and preferred guitar of all the acoustic players I have known over the years.

Gibson has some really nice acoustics as in the songwriter series and the jumbos. I just don't see why thay are so expensive while Martin and Taylor are much better for less money.

Seeing as you are asking the question on a Fender site, the answer is obvious. Whilst many would say get yourself a Martin, Taylor etc etc, you know you want a Fender.

My advise would be to try and find an old Japanese F-Series, say a F-75.

Take a look at philsfenders.com and you will see what I mean.

Hate to be the odd man out, but I think the Gibson Hummingbird is probably the best playing acoustic I've have ever experienced. And, although I think the guitar is not that great looking, the neck feel, comfort, action, and playability, was something I haven't been able to duplicate with any another acoustic!

As the owner of a Taylor 314CE, it comes close, but not the same. And, if you wonder why so many people play Taylors, just pick one up and you'll immediately know why! They make an incredible acoustic. It feels and plays like a pair of your best worn in shoes.

I know the reputation of Martin, but I always seem to struggle to play it cleanly. Yet the sound is probably one of the best - if not the best!

Finally, I'm pretty happy with my new Acoustasonic Strat, but if I could afford the $3700.00 needed to buy the hummingbird in Sweetwaters catalog it would be the only acoustic I would want, own, and play.

As usual, I'm the odd man out here. Personally I don't care for Martin's, Taylors or Gibsons. To my ears, the "best" sounding acoustics are the Seagulls and Alverez models and I am and always have been a huge fan of Ovations. In fact a guy I work with recently bought a Gibson "Hummingbird"...in fact he had to get a second one because the first one was screwed up from the factory (and he had to go through hell to get it replaced under warrenty). Once he got the new one, he brought it in to work and I'm sorry but it doesn't sound nearly as good as my old Seagull S-6...and I've never found a Martin or Taylor that sounds as good to me as my Gull. To me most of the really high dollar acoustics just really sound dull, flat and "lifeless"...no "sparkle" at all. In fact the -only- Martin I've ever played that I actually really liked was an acoustic bass...-that- actually sounded pretty decent to me! LOL! I have yet to find a Taylor or Gibson acoustic that I actually thought was worth anything...

With guitars, be it electric or acoustic, "tone" is most certainly subjective. Certainly there are people out there that as with an electric will think these more expensive acoustics are "better" just because they -are- expensive...after all, if it costs more, it's gotta be better, right? Of course if you take a lump of dog crap and cover it with 24 carrot gold, someone will eventually buy it...and inevitably brag about it. At the end of the day though it really just comes down to what each individual likes and what makes them happy I guess. I've been playing for close to 30 years now and I KNOW what -I- like and that's the important thing to me :-).

Just my usual worthless $.02 worth...

Jim
