Hey Flacster are you looking for one with electronics or just the basic acoustic? I will recommend the Takamine G series. They all are very good models for around what you are looking to spend. But the best advise is for you to go to a couple of music shops and try as many acoustics as you can and then get the one that fits you best and has the tone you like. Just keep in mind a solid top will cost more but sound twice as good.I've been looking at the Martin S1 series that are selling for $700 - $ 1100 and i haven't really found anything else as good for the money.

I have a Fender CD 60 and love it..only $200 with a nice case. Beautiful sound, stays in tune and cheap. I kinda wish I would have gotten the CE version but I need time to play my Tele anyhow. The Fender CD-280SCE
is solid top under $400.

And I love my Fender Sonoran SCE for under $300.

+1. I was in a music store today and I saw one of these hanging on a wall within easy reach. I couldn't resist grabbing for it. I'm a sucker for an acoustic with a Fender headstock, although I've never expected much from them. This time though I was very favorably impressed! At a little over $300 I would not hesitate to recommend this guitar for someone looking in the under $500 price range. I thought it sounded better than a lot of guitars costing much more. (No, my name isn't Esteban.)

I have a CD60 and it plays and sounds great for something coming from china. It cost me around $250. and is a great guitar for taking on camping trips etc. where you wouldnt want your more expensive guitar to go. :D

$200 to $600 is quite a big range. If you can limit it to $100 difference maybe we can give you more specific suggestions.

BTW I have a CD-60 as well and I love it! great guitar for the money!

For a cost effective acoustic I really like the Sonorans, around or just under $300 they are nice, can be plugged in and if something happens you aren't out the world cost-wise.

I suggest NOT a Fender. Try to get a used Martin or Taylor. You can fit one under 600 i am sure

I checked out one of those new Hohner essentials series - the Mini Jumbo acoustic/electric....I was very impressed. It's a basically no=frills guitar, but tonewise and playability wise it blew the more expensive Washburns, Takemines, and Baby Taylor I was playing along side it away. all for a little over 300 bills. I'm gonna seriously consider one.....

Ovation. Good sound and easy on the fingers. Doesn't have the chunky necks most acoustics seem to have. Nice low action right out of the box. Can get a really good used one for that price or a decent new one. I'd go with the best used one I could afford but plenty of good used ones out there for around $150.

My suggestion is to go hit several music stores and try out as many as you can in your price range.

I got this acoustic and the melody it gives is beyond compare. Definitely reccommendable. Check the stores from the links given in this site.
