Right now I'm considering getting a Sonoran SCE Custom. It recently got a decent review in Guitar Player. It's a middle of the pack entry in the sub-$500 range, from a tone, quality, etc. standpoint. In other words it's fine but not a standout.

What sets is apart are the cosmetics. It has a Strat style headstock, and comes in surf green, Lake Placid blue, candy apple red, and shoreline gold, all with a matching painted headstock. So it will definitely turn some heads and make a statement on stage.

If that appeals to you, you might want to check them out.

Good luck in your search.

The main difference between the Sonoran and the Kingman is the electric pickup. The Kingman uses a Fishman/Fender pickup. I have a Fishman in one of my acoustics and it is the reason I bought it. I have not played the Sonoran to compare it. When I heard a Fishman pickup, I had to have one, it's as simple as that.

Never played a Kingman or Sonoran, just the Montara. Played one and had to have it, you know the feeling. :D

Take a look at the Fender Grand series. Great guitars. I have a GA45SCE that is very nice. Look good too. One of the best actions on acoustic guitars I've ever played.

I've been playing my GDS 500 se so much I haven't been posting since it arrived. Projection, volume, brightness, sensitive to dynamics. Good for flat picking, better for fingerstyle. Open G tuning is Zeppelin III all the way. Beautiful sunburst I'll post pics of it tommorow.

thanks for the pictures. I just ordered one a few hours ago from musician's friend. What a smokin' deal. Hopefully it will get here this week. I have been looking around for a decently priced 'knock around' guitar. $399.99 for all solid woods is a great find.

I was hesitant at first, since I had never played a fender acoustic before, so I went down to Ted Brown and played 4 or 5 different ones. They didn't have the GDS 500 SE in stock, but I was very impressed by the ones they did have that I felt comfortable ordering this one online.

In the interim, while my GDS 500 one is in some box in the back of a truck somewhere, I will have to be content with my '65 Gibson LGO.

I really like the Burst on the Headstock, That looks good. How does it sound plugged in.

(I could have sworn I posted a reply like this a month ago, but I guess I didn't post it, I must have only Previewed it.)

Yeah, that burst on the headstock is the nicest touch on that paint job. I was never into the dark tobacco sunburst but I wanted one of these so when one came up for the right price I snagged it.

In my opinion, this guitar sounds great unplugged, I had a larger body Ibanez before and the tone/bottom end/volume acoustically with this smaller bodied more comfortable guitar is every bit as nice.

But I don't think that the electronics are the highlight of the guitar. I took it to the local Fender auth'd center and they checked it all out, while working perfectly as designed the output is very low, at full volume it is about 1/4 the output the Ibanez had on the same board. That's probably understandable based on the age of the guitar and the design at the time. I bought an ART preamp that I use with this guitar in live settings and that setup has worked very well.

I thought about replacing the electronics but opted not to in order to avoid having to modify the body too much.

It stays in tune well and is just smooth to play. One more photo of it...
