O.K. I have my Grandfathers old Fender King (not kingman.. King) and I am trying to date it. I've looked through the serial numbers yet cannot find anything. It has the bolt on neck with the Fender plate on the back.. it has the numbers 05115 above the Fender. I guess im not for sure if this is "the serial #" or if that is still located on the neck. I do know that the Kings were only made from '63-'65 when they then changed them to the Kingman until they were discontinued in '71. Thank you for any help you can give me.

This is a useful link...http://www.provide.net/~cfh/fender3.html

Interestingly the Fender King has very low collectors appeal at the moment. However it can change in the future. :) Personally I think any old Fender in great condition has collectors value if you like how it sounds

Yeah, I've noticed that its not really "Highly collectible". Honestly I really don't know why. The neck is a early 60's Strat neck and it feels gorgeous! Ive been playing acoustics for the last 15 years and this is by far the best one I've played. Even considering the newer Martins. I'm thinking they don't take into account that these were made to compete with Gibson and Martin. I'm not sure how the Kingman sounded or played in the later years of production, but the King sounds wonderful. I found odd that it has punch when really doing runs. It reminds me almost of a twangy Tele. The acoustics and harmonics on it are butter and the old Kluson tuners are perfect. When I picked the guitar up, it had been sitting untouched in its case for over 15 years.. believe me or not, the damn thing was still in perfect tune. Strings were rusted and dull, but it was right on.

I don't know much about the KIng but it must be pretty valuable. Check this out http://www.guitars.com/features/fenderking/AM5691.html

Yup.. thats my King. Except after looking at the up close pics, mine is in much better condition, but it doesn't have the tortoise pick guard, mine has the gold. Im thinking there is a way to date it by the gold pick guard. As far as value, I really have no idea. The original case has been lost or sold or who knows.
