i am going to buy a new acoustic this weekend either a reasonably priced martin or the godin archtop. my question is does an acoustic need a set-up? thanks.

If you purchase a good one most of the time the answer is no. You can do some adjustments to the nut or shave the bridge a little to lower the action.
I don't think you'll have a problem with a Martin or a Gibson. At least I've never had! Good luck! :)

I would add though that the neck relief should be checked twice a year.

I had to adjust the trussrod on my acoustic when it arrived .....
