All the beginners books I've perused start out by strumming but I'm more interested in learning finger picking. Any suggestions on where best to start?

Hi martinpd, welcome to the forum. You can look here
http://www.fenderplayersclub.com/woodshed/woodshed.htm
Also, there's a lot of interesting stuff on Youtube. Do you play acoustic or electric? Good luck.

Claude.

a lot of guys roll their eyes at me but first you gotta learn to use a pick... concentrate on timing and rhythm... this comes from experience...
and find a good teacher... a good one is worth every penny because he or she can hear what you cannot... and it will save you soooo much time
