My first acoustic was an Applause/Ovation knockoff, med depth, I would say that the Applause had much better bass response but the Fenders are waaaaay more comfortable to hold and play. For the life of me I could not get used to that round back. :?

I've found Ovations are usually for people who play electric too much and can't play a normal acoustic properly.

I never cared for the plastic round back either. I'd rather get a Telecoustic.

IMO.

Mine was too! Gloss black with red pinstripes around the edge. It had to go when I went to college - ran out of money for textbooks with a few months to go. I loved that guitar.

I like Ovations and I played acoustic over 30 years before i got my first electric. I like their sound, their necks, and their built in pickups. The rounded back wasn't that hard to get used to.

Like anything, it's personal preference. I learned to play acoustic while sitting alot, the round back always seemed to want to slide out on me on the bottom.

I sold that Applause to a good friend so I get to visit it often though. Wouldn't trade my Montara for anything though.

I have owned several Fender acoustics and just bought my first OVATION and I liked them all, however I love the sound on my OVATION CELEBRITY DELUXE. It sounds, looks and plays very pretty, no make that beautiful.
And if you are worried about customer loyalty, you don't have to, FENDER bought KAMAN MUSICAL INTSRUMENTS the makers of OVATION in 2008.

I LOVE my new Ovation! Tone is great! pick up and onboard tuner are great also! I find the "bowl" back quite comfortable, granted it is prone to slide around some if playing in the sitting position. Wouldnt trade it for any other model.

The higher end Fender acoustics are better because they are solid top guitars and wood back and sides. The action or distance from fretboard to strings is horrible on ovations plus the electronics on the ones i've played sounded waaay too bright. I'd go with the Fender and save money getting the better guitar.

I have an Agile Ovation copy and love it. I have bought and sold other acoustic guitar since I bought the Agile. I really like the tone and playability of the Agile.

At the risk of sounding somewhat defensive... How is buying higher end saving money? And truth be told it was the low end (bass end) on my ovation that really sold me on the guitar. Even if that werent the case the built in eq makes it easy to adjust the 'brightness" vs. low end. As far as action goes, that can be adjusted on ANY guitar, although I find stock to be just fine on this one.

Not to slight your opinion, but most of what you critiqued is adjustable.

I agree most are adjustable I'm just going by the prices in the shops that i go to because they all have the Ovation priced much higher than the higher end Fenders. As far as the action and sound quality goes it is pretty much player opinion and i have found Fender to fit my tastes better without the need for an additional set up. With this being said I still don't own a Fender I'm really more of a TAkamine guy anyhow. Ovations are too hard to handle and the Fender just didn't catch me like the Takamine did as far as quality for money.

I picked up a Telecoustic --I put it back down pretty quickly---it just didn't efeel right--I tried a Stratacoustic as well. They both felt like they would fall apart in my hands--and they sounded plastic-y.

Now the Acoustasinic Strat, however, is a nice guitar.
