I have been playing for quite a while now and my fingers still get a little sore. But more than that, they are all dented and disfigured. I play almost every night for an hour or two, they are calloused over it seems but they are all crinkled up and hard as a rock. It seems although I am getting better at playing I still need to press very hard on the strings. I have the Fender 60L strings I think on my guitar, at least that is what the replacement strings I have that came with it.

I fell away from playing for several months but I have been playing steady since about November, what is going on with my fingers? Is it me, my guitar, my strings? HELP...I want to learn new songs but I can only really play for about an hour and then my fingers get so dented that it is hard to depress only one string at a time.

Thanks for any assistance/knowledge.

Oh and I forgot to mention, my friend purchased a used guitar (which is also a Fender but a different model) I don't seem to have the same issues with his as I do with mine.

Thanks again

what string gauges do you have on your guitar? I have a feeling that .010 hurt more than .011 or .012!

I've been playing guitar almost every day for over a year and my fingertips have still hard surface, but they do not hurt as they used to do when I first started playing guitar.

Just a thought, maybe take your guitar to a luthier and have someone knowledgeable do a good set up on it.

When I got my Montara it felt good to play but the preamp was bad. So after ordering a suitable replacement I took it to a luthier and he gave it a once over. New bone nut/saddle, lowered the action. It was a night and day difference.

Even if you don't see an obvious issue with your guitar a wise luthier may find something you don't see.

I play more than four daily but I never got the problem from my fingers. I think you are not using finger caps. Use it and than reply me how relief it gives while playing guitar.

I have a stratacoustic that caused my fingers to hurt also. My significant other is a more experienced player (he is a professional lead guitar, fiddle, mandolin, steel guitar player) replaced the strings on my guitar and also did a set up on it so the strings weren't so far off the neck.... makes it much easier to play!! :)

I picked up a tip from David Crowder that helps me tons. I almost always tune my guitar to Eb and then use a capo (usually a screw on) to tune it back up to E. You lose a fret but this method eases the tension a bit so it's easier on the fingers. It also lowers the action some which can also be helpful depending on where it sat previously.

but you can have lower action by just adjusting the bridge or the truss rod! and you don't lose a fret ;)

I am playing the mandolin now for about two months. It is an old instrument that belonged to my father. Both my father and my uncle (both over 80 years old now) have played the mandolin for many years, but stopped recently because of there high age.

After two monthe, my fingers still hurt terrible after playing 10 or 15 minutes (I practice every day).
Is that normal. How long will this a problem? Is there something I can do to make the skin on my fingers stronger? Your advice is welcome.

I would think that, by now, your fingers would have toughened up to the point where they're not quite that tender. My 16-year-old daughter is now playing acoustic, and I bought here some of the Martin "silk and steel" strings, they seem to be easy to play, and still have a great sound. Fender probably has something comparable or better.

As was suggested earlier in this thread, having an experienced professional set your guitar up can make all the difference in the world.

I started playing when I was 13 and my mom and dad bought me a Yamaha acoustic and that thing destroyed my fingers... in fact I gave it up until I got to college. After I decided to start playing again, I took it to a music shop and one of the guys there worked on it and really made a big difference in the playability of the guitar. The cost to have this done was minimal.

I mostly play a Fender Tele now but I still bang on that old acoustic from time to time.

Hope that helps...

A tip to help those fingers is take a drop of superglue on a toothpick and rub on each fingertip and let dry (dont touch anything until dry). It hardens up and gives your fingers a shell for more abuse. Best thing though is to get you guitar set up with coated strings with the action lowered and the neck adjusted. It will make a worl of difference in the feel and sound of your guitar if done correctly.

My electric caused that problem. I'm no expert on the subject, but I'd say that it's just how long you've been playing(which I have no idea of). In fact, my fingers started hurting after I'd been off guitar for a while too.

I have the same problem with my fingers, but I have only been playing for a few months, so hopefully the aching pain will go.

Thank you for this post.

I have recently started playing again and have experienced the same soreness of my fingers. I don't remember this from playing years ago....was thinking it must be due to "old age!" Anyway, glad to know that this is not uncommon and will use some of these tips to hopefully get over this.

Appreciate it!
Michelle
