I am new to acoustic guitars. I have a friend thats owns a D-42 Martin ascoustic. I like the looks of the Fender acustic guitars.I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of a comparable guitar with the same beautiful sound. Also the Martins are pretty pricey too. Thanks.

I think it depends on your budget first ;)

Even more than electric guitars the sound and feel of acoustics vary from individual instrument to instrument. Everyone falls in love with a certain look but the key issue after budget is how the guitar feels in your hands and how it sounds to your ear. There are a surprising number of affordable guitars out there and Fender produces some truly fine instruments.

My recommendation is figure out what your budget will allow. Try as many different instruments as you can to determine what you are looking for in feel and sound...and when you find the one that has both don't hestitate to buy it cause it'll be your friend for life!

As everyone else said, check your budget. I am a huge Martin fan but only their high end guitars. If you want an amazing sounding relatively inexpensive dreadnought look into the Guild GAD series.

I played a Black Fender CD-60 acoustic at the shop that was off the wall incredible sounding with amazing action...and INCREDIBLY affordable!

Then I played the natural finish one next to it, not quite as lovely. Point is...you really need to start crawling the streets wherever you are and start playing what you find. No one minds when you do that, just find a corner and put it in your lap. Hit the pawnshops too.

You'll find that different body shapes are more or less confortable, different brands have better playability than others. I LOVE Fender's playability right out of the box so thats what I chose as my entry level. Very forgiving with finger placement on the fretboard, and super low easy action on the strings.

Lastly - Martins generally have solid wood tops. Solid wood tops are going to age and sound better. Laminate tops on the other hand are going to sound the same today that they will 5 years from now.
