I'm most of the way through a neck & bridge setup on my new Squier P-bass Special. For the bridge saddles, I found one of my small English-size allens work just fine, in fact it was the same allen wrench that worked on my other Fender basses (I forget the exact size, 3/64" or something like that). But the neck truss rod was another story - the adjustment is behind the nut. I ended up using a metric 4mm allen wrench because it worked. But I noticed it fit with some slot...not a good firm fit.
What size allen wrench should I use for the neck?
Thanks in advance,
...Doug in Arizona

Arizona ......nice country , I'll go there in 3 weeks , Tucson , Phoenix....

Why don't you go to Lowes or Home Depot by a complete Allen wrench set , Metric and English .

Buy American made wrench .

Always useful and you never ask which allen wrench you need

Er, well, OK, but I was hoping for a direct answer to my question. Guess I'll just have to buy a whole set just to get the one I need.

Wait few days , you 'll have a answer .

Good quality Allen wrench set will be useful all of you life .

Today you need one size , next month another size . You'll waist gas and time to go twice at Home Depot for only one allen wrench each time .
And at this time the allen wrench you need is out of stock

Doug, the vast majority of Squier truss nuts are 4mm. I own three different Squier basses, one being a P Bass Special, and they all follow this size trend. In fact, I need to replace one of the stripped nuts because whomever owned it before me did not use the correct size.

If you find yourself in need of a replacement nut as well, you can pick up a factory squier nut from these guys for $5.

And if you don't already own a set, it's always a good idea to have a metric and an imperial (American standard) set of allen wrenches on hand, especially when you perform your own setups on instruments.

leekirkham, thank you for that! Finally, someone who knows what size allen wrench I needed for my Squier truss adjusting nut. Actually, I figured out that the 4mm size works. And yes, I own a complete set of English AND metric allen wrenches....I even have a 4.5mm wrench in my metric set!!

The problem I'm having is the fit of my 4mm wrench in my Squier's adjusting nut - my 4mm fits very sloppy and my 4.5mm won't fit at all. That is to say, when I insert my 4mm wrench, I can get around 10 degrees of play on both directions without actually turning the truss rod.

So, I suspect that the 4mm recessed hole in the adjusting nut has wear in it, similar to stripped slots in a slotted screw head. If that's the case, it means I need to replace the adjusting nut.

Which leads me to these questions:

1. How is the old truss nut removed? I can't see how on earth it comes out, but there must be a way.
2. I thought the truss rod was one continuous rod that had the 4mm 6-sided allen hole in one end. Is that not the case?? Obviously not; it must be built so that a new adjusting nut can be slipped on. Can you please confirm that for me? I'd sure be grateful.

Thanks,
...Doug in Arizona

Stratmangler, THANK YOU FOR THAT! Those videos make a world of sense. At least now I have a better idea of what I'm dealing with. I'm going to order a new nut pronto.

Stratmangler, thanks for "beating me to the punch". That's what I was going to suggest as well, in fact, I'm getting myself the gripper wrench for my squier size truss nut. That is why I knew about it.

Here's a direct link so you can get one as well.

By the way, Doug, where are you in Arizona? I'm in Gilbert, just south east of Phoenix.

Hey leekirkham, I'm in Prescott Valley, which is adjacent to Prescott. I should change my signature to reflect that! I don't get down your way much, but I certainly do from time to time.
