I've had my eye on the Classic Vibe 70s Precision Bass for a while. I want to buy it, but would hate to pull the trigger and see the price go down. But it does seem like Squiers are seldom on sale. Anyone watch prices for long enough to have some advice?

I don't know where you are from but in North America , after christmas there lots of deals on any kind of store . Good time to deal a bass at your Fender dealer.

Or why not a second hand one ?

I know Classic Vibe guitar are great for the price , sure it is same for the bass.

Fender and Squier instruments rarely go "on sale." Fender had used a rebate incentive and has done price increase reversals before on Fender instruments during ongoing sales doldrums during the recession. However the economy is rebounding (even on vintage Fenders) and I expect to see little of that until the next recession.

Dealers however tend to sell items for less after Christmas and just before they do inventory for tax purposes. Additionally dealers, especially large ones, will put one model on sale or do clearances on a model being discontinued either by Fender Squier or being eliminated as an offering at their business.

As a general rule you can count on list prices going up and not down on long running marquis models like Jazzes and Precisions. There was one exception about 3 years ago when Fender did a line wide price increase on Fenders and wound up reversing it shortly after a collective customer rebellion.

I'd say right now is the best time to buy. If there are price increases they will come this summer. I don't expect Squiers to go down in list price. I think frankly they are a tremendous value. I just bought two Jaguars.

Great info, Brother Dave!!

A couple of years ago I bought a (treble) American Telecaster from Sam Ash for $800...it seems like sales like that are very much the exception. The was a model year behind when I bought it and I'll bet it was like you said, a result of inventory for taxes. The bass I want is the 70s classic vibe p-bass, which I think only came out in this last summer anyhow, so probably I'm not going to see it drop in price after I get it.

There haven't been many sales or incentives in the past year. I've seen similar complaints on other threads. Usually, January is the month when Fender raises prices.

I just bought my Vintage Modified from a dealer on eBay as a b stock item. It's still brand new, but discounted about 40 bucks to make room for new models. If you want to save a buck or two....
