Sorry if this seems a dumb ? but have not found a good answer (or try both)

Should a Squire Bass IV (or Fender Modern Bass IV (though it is S/S/HB versus Squier's Bass IV

(I do mean 6 strings ) Should a Traditional Bass Amp be use (only) or can a Guitar amp be used

(Tube or solid ) as well as USB Audio Interfaces (My Line 6 PODXT has ? 6 -7 Bass Amps in the

amplifiers (I added the model packs and Line 6 added a pack as well a while back ) Pre=Yamaha (I also use the PODXT as well as a Vox Tonelab +> in a Tube Slave amp 18 watt

by Atomic Amps (? now with another company not sure ) it sure helps Amp Modeleing

(then use a Microphone or two (with a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 ) I use a 2010 iMac 3.06 Ghz 12GB

ram + Apple;s Garageband (tried other DAW ones such as light versions but G-Band is pretty

simple enough for my needs ) Using Maverick OSX 10.9.x will wait on Yo for now

Buyout . I realize other companies make 6 string bass's ( I also wonder about Baritone's but they

do not seem strung with as thick strings or _ noted the Squier Baritone Jazzmaster

announcement also . * I only currently have 6 six guitars electric (5) and acoustic (2) one

which I am working as a 4 string "tenor " I paid $5.00 for a 1970's made in Chicago dual truss

rod (Match's Harmony Model__ but has the icon on headstock (space logo ) which is

supposedly a Silvertone model (not Danelectro-New Jersey )

Thanks (and sorry if got off track ) I did watch You Tube demo's of both Fender&Squirer

models but amp not shown or mentioned

The Bass VI six string tunes an octave lower than a Spanish guitar. That is going to overtax most guitar amps especially in the lower notes. It will work but you might not like the results and it could actually harm some guitar amps and especially their speakers.

I think you'd be much safer and get a far better tone with a bass amp. Most bass amp cabs are sealed and most guitar amp backs are open and an open backed amp for bass just doesn't project bass tone as well as a closed back sealed or ported bass cab does. Also bass amp EQ sections are voiced for bass where guitar amps aren't. Bass amps, especially modern ones, are very clean with low distortion. Guitar amps frequently have far more distortion built into them because guitar players like the character distortion adds. On a bass distortion just doesn't sound as pleasing but can be an interesting effect for some things.

For recording one of these I'd use a bass combo with an XLR out recording the direct feed on one track while simultaneously recording a second track using a microphone. Then find the best tone later. Sometimes a mix of both tracks is ideal, other times either the direct or the mic track soloed will work better depending on the project and the tone you want.
