I'm arriving late to the party and seeing that the discontinued Squier Precision Special (with the jazz neck) is considered to be one of their best offerings. While they seem to once have been in plentiful supply, with people claiming to get them for around $100 online, now they're not even popping up on ebay.

I've dug through the specs of all the current offerings and while some seem close, none come out and say "Precision bass with a Jazz neck." Is there a bass in the current Squier lineup that fits such a description?

Many thanks...

Here are the offerings that Squier currently has that are a P bass body with a J bass neck profile:

If you are looking for a PJ style bass that has a J bass neck profile, then no, Squier does not have a current offering with those features. As far as Squier P bass special basses for sale, I come across those more on Craigslist than on eBay, and almost always for better prices. Keep searching, they are on CL here and there, be persistent, it'll pay off for you.

Just go ahead and get the Fender active P-Bass Special. It is a way better bass and is 700 dollars street.

If you want to stick to a Squier PJ bass with a Jazz neck profile then you should look at the Squier Jaguar Special Vintage Modified with the 34 Inch scale and the single coil Jazz pickup and not the one with the humbucker. That is a $200 bass that sounds and plays like it cost more. Weak point to me is the thin pickguard, but I'm just being PICKY. Get it? Anyway I think if you play a few Jaguars you'll forget all about the old Squier Standard P-Bass Special. Jaguar whoops it and everything else in the price class. The Troy Sanders model has the 70's Jazz style block inlays too but it is $100 more.

Thanks guys. The Fender does seem to be a pretty good deal, but maybe just a little more than I would want to spend on something that's not my "primary" instrument (although when you're a one-man band, I guess everything becomes a primary instrument).

I will definitely do some heavy research on the jaguar. I had read some unflattering things about it in my search for the P Special, but it may be right up my alley. Thanks again,

Zach

Such as?

And what model were those unflattering things said about? There are several different Squier Jaguar versions.

I played Fender exclusively and never owned another brand of bass from 1968 until about 2005 or so. Even being as jaded and brand snobby as I was at that time I didn't find much to gripe about on the Squier Jaguar P/J 34" scale at all. I basically tried it to see how bad it sucked, only to find it was far from sucky. That model is the " Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special" with a BASSWOOD body which narrows the color options to sunburst and crimson transparent. To make sure you look at the right reviews, the exact model number is 0328900500.

If I needed a $200 bass that would be the one I'd get. It KILLS every other sub $400 bass on the market whether Squier or Fender or any other brand for my needs. I've not just played ONE of them but more like 15 of them. Haven't found one I didn't like yet, which is sort of unusual since I'm not really a Jazz neck devotee. The tones I want in a P/J are there. Of course for $200 street some corners were cut so it isn't the best bass in the world but is the best bass on the market right now for $200. I also like the Squier Classic Vibe 50's model in the new WHITE color, but it is almost twice as much money, so while it is quite MOST excellent it is also way more money. You will not find a $200 street price bass better than the Squier 34" Jag P/J...or $300 all the way to nearly $400.

I could see people not being as happy with the humbucker version because I didn't find it as versatile, but it is an OK instrument just more of a modernistic one-trick pony. I've never tried the short scale ones of any Jaguar Bass.
