I'm done with Jazz basses, just sold the one I had.

Now I'm looking for a buddy for my Sandberg P-bass.
It's gonna be a Squier, on that I'm pretty sure, but what model?

First I was thinking on the fretless P, but then there are the Matt Freeman model, the Classic Vibe, the Vintage Modified.....
There are no retailers I can try them all out at, so I try to get you guys to point me in the right direction. What Squier P-bass will be a good choice? I play in two bands (southern rock and a folk/blues band)
The tone are nice from the fretless I'm told - but so are the Matt Freeman.
I'm looking for a fat, rich oomph from the bass, and an easy playable versatile instrument to handle.

What to do, folks?

BTW - I hear some people complain about the ebonol fretboard on the fretless P doesn't last long, any experiences?

With the type of music you say you are playing regularly, I'd say the classic vibe would be a good choice. A great feel with a nice P bass tone to "fill in the gaps". In fact, they just added a new "70's Classic Vibe" to the lineup that would suit your music rather well.

There's also the 60's version which is great too. You can find it new in Fiesta Red, and Aztec Gold (Musician's Friend) or if you look around, you can find a first edition in Sonic Blue.

People complaining about ebonol wear are probably using roundwounds. But even flats can mess up a fretless with a maple or rosewood board if you wiggle them back and forth all the time. I'd suggest using Nylons probably but for sure not the stock roundwounds. Maybe GHS 3025 flats would be more versatile.

Squier Classic Vibe fretted basses can't miss as previously suggested but my personal favorite was left out. It will make you a standout guy if you play one of these:

That one is the BUTTERSCOTCH BLONDE. I like this model BETTER stock than the Fender Japan 51 Reissue. Be SURE to try one! Also it is now available in a classy WHITE BLONDE:

If I was going with a split coil Squier P-Bass I'd opt for the Fiesta Red 60's. Awesome looking instrument!

The CV 50's look cool.
Since no retailer in this part of the country haven't got many basses in store, I will have to rely on ordering online (Thomann, in this part of the world). No wonder online shops are taking over the business.
Any comparisons here or elsewhere on the CV P-basses?

Thanks for your help guys

I work for a small guitar shop and we've had a few of the 60's CV P-basses and they were all awesome! I can't recommend them higher! I'm curious about the new 70's P and still have yet to check out the 50's... but the 60's is awesome and has a great deep tone and "broke in" feel to it

Any of the VB that I have checked out have been surprised of the excellent quality. I wanted a P V to string with some flats. The price point made it irresistible. I ordered it based on some reviews and opinions from the Fender website. I definitely was not disappointed. Other than a quick tweak of the neck, the bass was gig ready out of the box. I am not suggesting the V as the exact model to purchase (although a awesome contra B), I am just chiming in with everybody else on this post that any of the Vintage Vibe Series P-basses are winners! Classic industry P-bass tone, feel, & iconic appearance, it is all there.

Also check out the active Jaguar 34 inch P/J. I liked them so good I bought two. Very versatile and enough oomph to push any amp to the limit!
