A few weeks ago, I purchased a used Squire Affinity Jazz bass from Craigslist. It's a 2008 model from Indonesia which apparently never got used because it still had the protective plastic on the pickguard with zero scratches! After I set up the neck and bridge the bass plays great but it's apparent that the pickups and pots are garbage. I'm looking to replace them with a better set of passive pickups (Fender or Seymour Duncan) but am confused by all that I have read regarding the size difference between the neck and bridge pickups.

The internet is full of conflicting info so needless to say I've read that pre 2000 model Squires and Made in Mexico Jazzes have the same size pickups in both positions and post 2000 Jazzes have different size pickups (longer bridge/smaller neck) similar to American made Jazzes. Likewise, I've read the exact opposite; pre 2000 Indonesian & MIM Jazzes have dissimilar sized neck and bridge pickups and are the same size in post 2000 models. I've measured the PUs in my bass and they are in fact the same size.

Now the question is this; does any pickup manufacturer (Fender, SD, DiMarzio, etc.) make specific pickup sets for Squire or MIM jazz basses with same size pickups or am I going to have to go with EMGs (they make a set specifically for MIM Jazz basses)? Or, will I need to enlarge the existing bridge pickup slot on the body? I'd like to stick with passive pickups to avoid issues with battery placement under the pickguard or control plate and/or routing a battery box into the back. The bass cost me a whopping $60 with gig bag so I don't really want to dump too much money into it. Looking for the best bang for the buck? Any ideas?

Thanks for your help,
Pete

Hi Pete, and welcome to the Fender Forums. Great first post and question. To the best of my knowledge no one offers jazz p'up sets specifically for Squiers. So measure your p'ups and find some with the same length. Or route out your body to accept standard jazz p'ups.

  Go here and check out these DiMarzios. You can order two of the shorter length. Plus these have adjustable poll pieces to help even out string-to-string volume differences.
