All--
I have an old Squier P-Bass SN SQ16xxx, which dates it to 83-84, I believe. I'm not a bass player and it mostly sits around in a case for occasional use in home recordings. I'm wondering if it's worth cleaning it up and selling it. I've seen prices for Squier P-Basses all over the map, but I've heard these early Japanese models are more desirable. Any idea what they are worth?

Thanks,
Chris

Value is impacted by many factors including your location which is unknown, condition, originality and any problems that need attention.

So if I posted a photo of an '83 Corvette and asked what it is worth, that really wouldn't be enough information to make anything but a wild guess.

The Japanese Squier basses are more desirable yes, but not more valuable than a Fender made around the same time. It is a Squier and they just don't appreciate in value. Japanese JV series Fenders made at the same time as the SQ series Squiers and the E series Fenders made a year later than the SQ Squiers are both far, far more valuable. Still these are really good instruments, and I wouldn't take less that $250 for one in fair original shape. I wouldn't ask more than $500 for a flawless one. People just don't collect Squiers like they do Fenders. You'd be really lucky to get $500 for one around here near mint and probably wind up taking $400. But your location matters some and may help or hurt the value.

@brotherdave
Thanks, that's good info. I'm looking more for a general range than an appraisal. Just need to know if it's worth the time and effort to sell it. Knowing that $500 is about the most I could hope for tells me I should just keep it around for occasional use...

FYI, I'm in the Knoxville area. I acquired this bass in Florida from the original owner around 1985. I don't know of any mods to it but there are two odd holes on either side of the pickups. I thought maybe it used to have one of those metal string/bridge covers on it but I'm not sure. Other than that, it's in untouched condition. I haven't done anything to it other than change the strings a couple times, wiped it clean occasionally and probably polished it once. The only problems to speak of are that the pickups are a little loose and the jack is touchy.

It's been a "case-dweller" for most of the 29 years I've owned it and it has the signs of just sitting around--a buildup of "crud" on the metal surfaces. It's got a few dings and minor scratches but nothing major. I wouldn't call it rough or banged up by any stretch. I think it just needs a thorough cleaning.

I'm attaching a few more pics.

Thanks,
Chris
