I want to find out more about my Squier P-Bass. I know it is made in Indonesia. It is black, with a black pickguard, thumb rest, and Schaller tuners. The serial number is PN 700228. Anyone know when it was made? What's it worth? Is a Mexican P-Bass a better guitar?

I don't think that is an Indonesian serial number either. They all start with "I" followed by the code for the contractor. You sure you aren't looking at a part number?

please upload photos of your instrument including the serial number to a photo hosting service then post the direct links to the photos here using the IMG button.

Also value is highly relative to your location in the world. One can only tell you what it would be worth where the appraiser is located.

Howdy. I just signed up here as a result of the above question. I, too, have a Squier P Bass EXACTLY like the one above...... well, I will have it in about 1 week....just bought off of yee-bayee. Everything in the pics is spot-on, but the thumb rest is missing; it actually has the 2 holes where it went, so it must be factory. Yes, this one is a mystery. I will be more than happy to dissect it once its in my hands. A glance at the S/N and my mind immediately goes to "N7", as in 1997.......I hope the neck heel and/or neck pocket will reveal accurate information.
I also searched the part number- that gold-foiled sticker shown on the above pics. Of course I input the name Squire to do this. I was somewhat successful in the fact that yet another Squier P bass, exactly like this one, showed up. So, now we have 3 "Fakes".... LOL.
Aside from the body looking like your run-of-the-mill P Bass, Other things look like 2 of my '89/'90 Korean P Basses (though both have the laminate body, AKA "Plywood". First: The lack of a skunk stripe. Second: Those HEFTY "Licensed by Schaller" tuners. These tuners have a bigger footprint than my MIM Fender "Black Label Squier Series" tuners. Also, this is a rosewood fretboard as opposed to maple on the MIK's. The MIK necks are excellent, IMHO. I truly hope the same is true for this neck.
Sorry to ramble on, but I figured I'd share what I know along with what I will know soon. I have been meaning to sign up for years and finally did. Thanks for your time.

Ok I've done more research. I'm not saying this a certainty, but a possibility. Before the more recent posts in this thread by people that have them I found there are other Squier Indonesian serials starting PN and people asking about them in other forums and threads.

On USA/MIM Fenders when a serial doesn't fit the "official" format, it doesn't mean it is fake, it just means it was not made for FMIC to distribute in their territory, but instead is for distribution outside FMIC's territory. FMIC leaves it to the DISTRIBUTOR to support the instruments in foreign territories.

There have been other instances of serials that don't fit standard practice on Squier and Fender instruments, and some that have serial stickers instead of silk screened serials. These are instruments sold either in the country of origin or exported to emerging markets like India or Africa or at the time these were made China. However they are not imported to the USA.

Squier made an entire series called the "California Series" that was never intended to be imported to the USA and they also had wacky serials often applied with stickers. Historically the reason the serials are done in an odd format on both Fender and Squier instruments is to lock these instruments out of FMIC support. I suspect the PN serials are like that too.

I call oddball serials "ORPHAN" serials because the parents (Fender/Squier) wants nothing to do with them after they are born and sent to a foreign distributor.

The Squiers like these made for emerging markets use the cheapest materials. They are better than no Squier though in countries where a Fender or better quality Squier are just out of reach economically to the majority of buyers in these emerging markets and probably better than the rest of the affordable options in these markets.

They are not by any stretch of the imagination desirable at all to people with access to a better quality Squier or Fender, but better than nothing to people living in countries where incomes are low and they just can't afford more. However they are not fake, just orphans.
