Ok. I bought a '01 P-bass special. Decent shape, after a few tweaks it plays great. The previous owner had replaced the stock guard with a chunk of linoleum. While it looks good from a distance, it bugs the piss out of me that someone would do such a think. I tried getting a replacement from Guitar Fetish (which they claim is a perfect fit) and it would not work without recutting the damn thing. The tabletop guard has 14 holes drilled through it, and here's my question: Is a Fender 13 hole guard going to fit, or would it be another waste of money? I don't want to poke more holes in my bass, but I don't want to have to shell out big bucks for a custom guard, either. Advice? Answers? Comments? I'm looking to black-out the hardware on this axe, and the guard is a major component in the process...

Post some pictures of your bass. It will help us to help you.

I honestly don't know what Squire model was called a Precision Special in 2001.
FYI: When you are dealing with different countries of origin for manufacturing Squire instruments, it is not uncommon to have to do a final fit when replacing pick guards.
Often pick up cavities and neck pockets must be adjusted with files or even saws on repl. PGs to get them to fit properly.

Good luck with your bass.

It is possible that an extra hole was drilled to keep the material flat. Some places will duplicate the pattern of the pick guard if you send it in.

Just to avoid spending that kind of money, I'm heading over to Guitar Center today with a trace of the one that's on there...I know they have Fender guards in stock, and if it fits, there's my answer. I can also get a blank sheet of material from Guitar Fetish, in case I feel like adding a more personal touch. (and that is MUCH cheaper)

Problem solved. Bought a Proline guard at GC, and it fit. The screw holes didn't match up exactly, but I'm pretty handy with a drill, sooooo....
Thanks for the input, I much appreciate it.

Thanks BC. After a few months with it on, I'm going to have to take it back off and file some of the edges down...they're turning white from stress around the pups and where it meets the neck. Not a huge deal, but it's so damn tight I can't adjust my pups the way I want to...
