Traded in my red SS Bronco bass plus a few $$$ and got this lightly-used "Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special Short-Scale" (phew, that's a long name), in silver:

Image
Scale Length: 30" (762 mm)
Fingerboard: Rosewood
Fingerboard Radius: 9.5" (241 mm)
Nut Width: 1.5" (38.1 mm)
Bridge Pickup: Standard Single-Coil Jazz Bass
Middle Pickup: Vintage-Style Split Single-Coil Precision Bass
Controls: Volume 1. (Middle Pickup), Volume 2. (Bridge Pickup), Master Tone

The original owner wanted to switch to a 5-string bass.
All it needed was to raise the action a fair bit and then pull the bridge saddles way back to get the intonation right.

I like it way better than the Bronco, which was beginning to collect dust.
It's really light too. I think it's lighter than my Strat, Epi LP, and El Degas SG copy.

I did just post this on another thread, but I'll add it here too. Image

I don't have any other pics of it, but maybe I might take new ones since I've got my Jazz back into action again.

I didn't take any photos of my first one years ago (A 2003 PJ in Candy Apple Red).

But I just picked up a new Affinity Jazz to play with... Loving it so far...
Image

I picked it up as a modding platform, I LOVE the Affinity neck, and just the ergonomics of this bass, it fits me well... But it doesn't have the electric or aesthetic specs I am going for, so the modding begins...

Step 1 is done. Swap out boring white pick guard with aftermarket tort guard.
Image
Step 2 is done. Pick up a set of Squier Duncan Designed Jazz pickups, and shield the snot out of them.
Image
Step 3 is in inventory, waiting to be applied. Use conductive coating paint to shield pickup and control cavities making the conductive coating make contact with things like the control cover etc, but steering clear of anywhere ground is NOT supposed to be...
Step 4 is to swap out the OEM bridge with a Classic Vibe 60s High Mass bridge. I have it, just need to install it.
Step 5 is to replace the original J Bass logo with one that spells out Jazz Bass. Really what were they thinking truncating the name?

Will post up detail photos once it's done...

Sorry, have been busy playing it, I forgot to post up here...

To prep for this job, I got a can of MG Chemical Total Ground conductive spray coating. The stuff isn't cheap, but it does a great job.
Image

I started by stripping the strings off, removing the pickguard, removing the original Affinity pickups, and pulling the bridge. Sorry no pics of this stage...

Then I shielded the underside of the pickguard around the pickups...
Image

Then I masked off the body and neck of the bass to avoid any possibility of overspray. The Squier finish isn't resistant to tape adhesive by the way. There are small unnoticeable spots where paint flaked off. I need to touch up when I can find the proper color...
Image

I then sprayed 4 coats, of the conductive paint into the pickup cavity, as well as the control cavity. I soaked a Q tip end in the paint, and ran it carefully through the bore between cavities using it as a paint brush, to fully coat the bore making it shielded and electrically conductive. Once dry, I removed the masking, and then applied the copper foil tape to improve grounding between bridge and ground lead.
Image

I forgot to snap a pic of this stage, but I filled the outer 2 screw holes with toothpicks glued in, and then trimmed flush. I then mounted the High Mass bridge, installed the pickups, wired them to the control plate, reinstalled the control plate, pickguard, strings etc... And lastly ran it through a full setup. (The pickups are still a hair high for my tastes... I need to fix that.)

The finished product plays like a dream, sounds exactly like a Jazz Bass should, and best of all, is something I can be proud of because, well, I did all the custom work on it...

2012 Squire Vintage Modified 70's Style Jazz 5

Purchased for a backup, but seeing a fair share of stage time;

Lots of mods;
SD SJ5-3's Bassline pups.....CTS pots.......Vitamin Q Cap.....Switchcraft jack......Copper shielded all cavities and back of pg......white pearl pg......2 round string retainers and Schaller strap locks........refinished in Surf Green including the headstock with a Squier replacement decal.

The bass plays and sounds great.

Here's a couple of updated pics with the Squier Jazz Bass and Bad $@! II bridge.

2010 VM P, with a Matt Freeman neck (with a tinted gloss finish) and a EMG GZR pickup:

Image

My Franken Squier, with the neck and electronics/DD pickup from the above VM P bass, Affinity body and bridge, Fender pearloid pickguard. I had to move the bridge as it was way out of alignment. had to fill and drill the mounting holes and move it about 1/8" towards the G string side:

Image

2010 70's Jazz, minor cosmetic mods:

Image

My favorite (they are all great, but ...) Is the top one, the VM P. With the MF neck and the GZR pup it plays and sounds awesome, it's got the lowest action of any bass I've ever played.

That's pretty cool. 8) I'd like to mod my Jazz like that to give it more of a vintage feel. Change the knobs from those silver ones to some old school black Fender knobs and maybe even the pick up covers. Although, I hope it would fit with the Leo Quan BA II bridge on it.
