I got a chance to test drive a PJ bass tonight and overall thought it was pretty decent. Very much a good value for what you get. I played a black/black version.

The neck was decent, the finish was adequate, as was the hardware. The sound that came from it was very good, definitely worth having as a gigging bass and when I get a little extra cash, I'll probably pick one up.

Now to try a VM PJ bass!

Squier has come a long way. I like my VM Jazz a lot.

It looks pretty cool. I've watched a couple demos and those Affinity basses didn't sound half bad, considering the quality of recordings. I haven't been to a music store in ages, so I haven't had much of a chance to really demo anything myself. I should try and go and see what's what.

I find that the sound and tone of the basses is pretty darn good, the downside is in that they don't last as long as the Fenders due to the better quality materials.

True, but you can also modify or customize them if they have good bones, too. I have a Tele copy that I paid $40 (random impulse purchase) at a TJ Maxx department store that has a really nice neck on it, but the pick ups aren't that great on it and I'd like to replace. The originals aren't the worst I've heard, just not as good as the Squier Custom Telecaster I have and a little noisy. I think it would be worth the modification because of how the guitar plays and would make a nice back up in case something happens to the Squier.

Even if I get more guitars (I'm mainly a bassist, so that's priority for gear) I'm going to keep the Tele copy because I have a history with it. It was the guitar I used the first time I ever played live playing a guitar, besides bass. I've been playing bass for over 25 years, and technically played guitar as long (just something to mess around with and never dedicated myself to,) but I had never played one in a live setting. Just used it as an accompaniment to my bass when writing demos and such. I might have jammed a couple times with some people here and there, too. I always was apprehensive about playing it professionally. Still am, sometimes. I'd rather stick to just bass.
