Well, I want a P-sound for some punk rock and have the chance of getting a Matt Freeman bass and an American P. Both for cheap.

Unfortunately I can't try the MF myself before buying. Sounds gorgeous on the store online clips, though.

Is the difference that big in terms of SOUND? I mean, the materials are the same (or even better in the MF??), the pickups are the same... but I was wondering if you have any experience with both.

One thing to consider is that the MF is maple and the Fender is a mix of other woods. I like the sound of Maple basses for punk rock.

I want the best sound possible. I don't really care much about the finish as long as it's ok.

Help this folk out!

El Gato, do not let the Squier spec sheet fool you. What makes you think the pickups are the same? They aren't even made on the same continent!

The MF is by all accounts a good bass and is a good value, but nothing about it is the same as an American Standard any more than a Mexican made Fender Standard P-Bass is the same as an American Standard P-Bass. In fact the Mexican one is closer to the USA one.

So much is better on a USA instrument that I can't list all the differences or I'd leave something out.

You can also get an American Standard P-Bass with a maple fretboard if that is the issue.

In 5 to 20 years more differences will become apparent. The hardware (even down to the fretwire and screws), the body wood, the truss rod system, the electronics (not just the pickup but even the pots) is all superior on a USA made Fender instrument. Granted the Squier stuff today is fantastic compared to the Squier of yesteryear just as today's MIM P-Basses are so much better than the early ones, but seriously don't get fooled by specs. If you can get the American one I do not think you will regret it. This is especially true as far as long term resale value is concerned.

That being said, a MF might be perfect for you! Just don't be fooled by spec sheets because they are quite different and you should not expect it to be "the same" in any regard beyond being similar in appearance to an American Standard.

I appreciate your response.

Allright, I'm trading my 90 Stingray SR4 classic for an American Standard Maple Mn 3TS P this afternoon :)

Thanks again!

Enjoyed the video and it is very good with you being an all around talent. Actually the MF would also be a good fit for that genre of music. HOWEVER someone that uses a Shure SM7 for studio lead vocals and Evans heads is obviously savvy enough about tone to know that the American is the way better choice for sonic versatility. So, unless all your music is hard rock like that video, the American will give you a wider range of tonal options and hold up better long term. By long term I mean for a lifetime. It offers a different tonal palate from the Stingray but I think you'll like it. The Stingray is an excellent weapon also, especially direct in...so I'm not so sure I'd trade it. Very few Leo Fender bass designs disappointed.

Many thanks, Dave.
I got the American finally :) Very happy with it so far. I'll miss my MM SR a LOT though. I tested it and the low end is not the same but those mids are heaven :D I can pull those lows out with some production anyway so yes, very happy with the trade.
Thanks again for your input and words.
Cheers
