In September, Musician's Friend received a shipment of at least 27 Bass VIs. All went to customers who placed their orders before I did. Also, I believe the Bass VI was released in Europe before it was released here as many of the early reviews and videos come from there. That's conjecture on my part.

It would be nice to get it before the holidays so I would have more time to play it.

Oh, OK. Yeah, I know what you mean about about it being nice to get it before the holidays. It was originally planned to be used in the studio for a recording, but that might either just wait or not utilized for this particular track.

Just received an e-mail from MF. My new ship date is now 23-Jan-2014. That's almost a four month wait. :(

What is the deal with the delays on these? Are there production problems or did they not make enough in the first batch to meet demand? Europe seems to have gotten a good amount, why aren't any making their way into the states?

Ouch, that sucks! Well, on the sunburst model I ordered from AMS is now listed as due on 12/23/13, which is around two weeks from now. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting, in case they change it again. I guess one or both of use will get one sooner or later.

I've wondered that, too. Who knows what's going on?

For what it's worth, I e-mailed Fender Customer Service to see if they would tell me what's going on. If I get a response, I will share it.

Thanks. I actually have a draft saved that I was working on as well.

Here is Fender's response. It's about what we thought.

Hello Steve,

Thanks for writing in!

There was a large influx of orders for that particular model, creating a production backup. All orders that were placed from September on are waiting on the same stock. It’s an unfortunate problem, but that January time-frame is 100% accurate!

Well, at least they got back to you about this. Maybe they weren't anticipating the demand of it, or somebody fudged up in production.

So for those of you that have one of these V1's.....can you give some practical review on it for those of us, me, who are clueless on this particular model. I've looked up some Youtube clips on it, Wiki, other places to get info but real sure I'm getting it.

So it's a 6 string bass? 30 inch scale? And this gives you the flexibility to play bass and throw in some guitar chords when you feel like it? SInce it is one octave below a standard guitar do you think that in a 3 pc situation it would clearly give the bass tones needed to hold up the bottom end? At $500 I'm not near ready to buy one but curious about it.

Interested to know more, if there are some useful links I'd take those too, thanx!

I think you actually pretty much nailed it. It IS a bass; sometimes you'll hear it described as a baritone, but it isn't. The low E is the same pitch as the low E on any other bass. As for its use in a three piece, well...Jack Bruce used one in Cream. So much of it is dependent on what you're playing and how you EQ it, I'd be hesitant to say yes, but there's also no reason for me to say no it wouldn't work for your application.

If you're not ready to buy at $500 list, how does $350 retail sound? That's what they're going for at major retailers.

Also, don't know if it helps, but here's a video of Mark Hoppus using one with blink-182...a three piece.

For the original Fender version, John Lennon played one on "Helter Skelter" as well as a couple other songs. Robert Smith from the Cure used one extensively on a lot of Cure tracks, especially on the album "Disintegration." If you are familiar with the New Order song "Blue Monday," Peter Hook uses one all over that track, but he has a Shergold, not a Fender model. He used that on a bunch of other stuff, too. I suppose you can either use it as a lead or rhythm instrument, or both. I think it's an interesting instrument and I can wait to get mine.

Thanx for the info, I guess I thought Jack Bruce was an Gibson EB player.

Not familiar with Blink 182 or the Cure but I'll check them out.

Like that blue color on the Blink 182 video. Very intrigued by this, too bad no store around here will have one. The closest thing to a store that might have one is Guitar Center over 1 1/2 hour away.

And yes, I saw the $350 price somewhere else.

Lots of artists performed different kinds of music with the Bass VI.

Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman (solo at about 1:46)

The Beatles - Hey Jude (George played one in the official video) This is from the David Frost Show. You get a pretty good look at it.

Cream - Sunshine of Your Love (Jack Bruce used it on this and other songs)

Cure - Pictures of You (Live) - They use a guitar, Bass VI and a bass.
