I posted in the PBass forum until a great user said there was this one. I was asking about my bass and whatever info I could find out about it. The user was very helpful and said I had found a J/P lefty which they do not make anymore and that Fender might not have made them.

I bought it for $150 so I am wondering if that was a good deal. It was listed as used-excellent condition. I am also trying to find out all that I can about it. I have not owned a bass in years, I had a bottom of the line Squire any years ago but it was a righty and I was never comfortable with it. I didnt know back then I needed lefty. Guitar City told me what I should have! I did do a little more research this time around but I have to admit I did not do any on the bass before I bought it. Got it off of Ebay with a make an offer. It was listed for 280 and I never thought they would take 150.

From what I could find so far I think it is a Squier® Standard P-Bass Special Left-Handed Electric Bass Black & Chrome Sp. Edition. Can it be a Standard and a Special? What does that mean? Is it cause of the extra pickups? What makes it a J/P as the other user suggested? Does that mean it has a thinner neck? That would be nice for my smaller hands.

So any further information you could give me so I know exactly what I have would be great. Thank you!

Nice bass! The P/J refers to the pickups. P = Precision, the split coil PU on the pickguard. J = Jazz, the long pickup next to the bridge. I just got a Jaguar body bass with the same pickup combination & love it.
:D :D

Thank you! It certainly wasnt advertise as a P/J! Because it is, is that why it is called a Standard PBass Special? Or is that the wrong name for it? Was trying to find any info on the web about it.

Try contacting Fender Support with a picture & description if you can't get help here. The main thing is how do you like it. You got a good deal if it's a playable bass IMO. My bass is also called a Special and it is the pickups that make it different in my case.

I got my baby! I had been waiting all week to get her and she is finally here! Fits me so much better than my last bass. I got the whole package now (still waiting on the cable and picks to get here), Fender: Rumble 15 amp, padded gig bag, stand, padded leather strap - moto style, picks, Gold Premium 12' bass cable, and some flatwound light strings. Once everything is here I will take a photo. Spent just under $300 for it all.

Already have started practicing with my fingering. I really really wish the cable was here...not good enough to play anything acousitcally and tell if I have it in tune or not. Didnt get a tuner - learned how to do it with the 5th fret before and thought I should try again. Do have an app on the phone to double check myself.

I am so excited! Thanks again everyone for your help. Photos soon!!!

Diana

Oh - anything else you may think of I should have or have on hand?

Congrats on your new bass and gear. Bass looks really nice. Sounds like you're about set up to start thumpin'. :D

It wouldn't hurt to invest in a tuner. You can find handheld tuners for $15 or less at any of the online stores......Sweetwater, Musicians Friend, AMS, Same Day Music, Sam Ash, etc....

You may be able to tune each string to each other using the 5th fret, but your pitch (440) will probably be off. Also the tuner will allow you to check your intonation.

If you don't know how to do your own set ups, it's probably not a bad idea to take it to a guitar tech and have them set it up for you. Cost will vary depending on where you live and what tech you use, but it's usually not all that expensive and worth the price. If you can, watch them do it so you can learn to do it yourself.

Good luck and have fun thumpin'!

Glad you are happy with your new bass.

I've had a variety of basses over the years. Having a Jazz and Precision pickup on one bass is my favorite setup. Not only are the two pickups distinctive sounding on their own, you can blend the pickups for unlimited possibilities.

Learn to play with your fingers as well as with a pick. The sound is different for each style.

Good luck.

The formula for a passive (meaning no battery) Precision Bass Special was established years ago. It is a P/J pickup configuration with a volume/volume/tone control setup, a Precision body and a Jazz Bass neck profile. Meaning the neck is a little bit narrower than a normal Precision bass neck. Most P-Bass Specials follow that format. The current Fender P-Bass Special is an active, so the controls are more elaborate and requires a battery. However the body is still a P-Bass body with a J-Bass neck.

$150 was a very fair price from a dealer for this instrument.

Just saw you ordered moto picks. If playing with a pick you need a REALLY thick one on bass. Fender HEAVY is about the thinnest I've had any luck with. I don't play with a pick much any more. When I did I liked the Fender triangles in HEAVY thickness. Recently I've been using the Everly Star picks some, the purple ones. Like them too. The advantage to the Fender triangle pick is when you break one side you can just flip it around and have two more points to break off. Unfortunately haven't been able to get the HEAVY ones lately. I used to buy them by the gross but just don't play with a pick much anymore. I like a really thick pick, but really think fingers are easier for me.

An electronic tuner is nice to have. I've used several different kinds and still use 3 different ones. Currently the Snark SN-2 is the little clip on I use. It is switchable to tune by either microphone or vibration. I also suggest the free online tuner at http://www.tunemybass.com/ and suggest using the SINE WAVE option there under the CUSTOM TUNING tab. It is easy to hear when on pitch with it.

Wow they were working earlier. Skinnypigs, you must get that fixed at ONCE so Chromeface can see!
