It is the Squier version of the Fender MB-4 which was a Fender model bass built at Fujigen in Matsumoto for a long time. When Fender stopped making the MB's in Japan they handed the basic design over to Squier. It is an adaptation of a basic design initially developed during the Heartfield project, which was a brand started up by FMIC that ran from about 1989 till 1993 based entirely in Japan. The MB part stands for "MODERN BASS." Some of the initial Heartfield bass designs continued in production for Fender Japan for a number of years after FMIC shut the brand down in 1993.

The Fender version of the MB4 didn't have the pirate graphics and came in a range of colors. There was also both a Fender and Squier MB5 model which had 5 strings. Squier added the graphics to the basic design in order to appeal to younger buyers. The hardware, electronics and woods used are quite different between the Fender and Squier versions as is often the case. I always liked the neck profile on the Fenders.
