Greetings All,

I've played guitar off and on as a hobby for thirty years, and I've always wanted to learn how to play bass. I took my chances on a Squire Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass, and I couldn't be more pleased. I'm loving the sounds I can get out of it, and I'm having a ball adding much-needed bass tracks to my guitar and vocal music. I picked it up for $240 and added a factory-restocked Marshall MB15 for another $120. I can't imagine I'll ever need more than this basic set-up.

I appreciate all the helpful advice and links that this community has already provided, and I'm sure I'll come and bug you guys for help every now and then. Until then, here's my new rig.

Peace,
Dave.

Welcome to the Forums.

Very nice rig you've got there, I have a Squier VM Modified Jazz that I like a lot.

The main thing is, as long as you're happy, that's all that counts.

I only see one problem. You're going to be G.A.S.sing for a bigger amp. :D

That's O.K. though, it doesn't make you a bad person.

Enjoy your bass!

Thanks, oxfan! No doubt about the amp, but my family members are already complaining about this one (or, maybe it's my talentless playing...).

Cheers,
Dave.

You're welcome. I don't think it's your playing, they just don't understand. :D

I've said for about 2 years now, well almost 2 years, that the Squier Jaguar with the 34 inch scale and the standard P/J setup (not the P/J Humbucker or the short scale SS version) is a STEAL. I've played several and they each were fine. They'd be all the bass most people ever need. My only thing is there is no Active/Passive option and the hardware might be a tad inferior to Fender but otherwise I was amazed.

If recording and your amp doesn't have an XLR out, I'd get one with an XLR out or get a Bass Driver and use headphones to play the bass tracks. I actually prefer to mic the bass amp on one track and also patch in the XLR direct output to another track recording both simultaneously. Then mix the two tracks to get the best possible tone. Try it and you'll see that often the best tone is a combination of the two tracks while others the direct or microphone sounds more appropriate. Recording direct only is done a lot, but I prefer the combo method as you can catch some air and cab resonance with the microphone for a more natural sound.

Thanks, brotherdave. I have to say that your comments on this bass over the past (approximately) two years definitely influenced my thinking and gave me good confidence. Thanks for the recording tips. My amp does have a line out (1/4" not XLR) which is one of the reasons I bought it. I haven't tried mic'ing my amp yet, but I'll definitely give it a go (I always seem to like the quality of mic'ed amps better anyway) and try mixing the mic'ed and direct signals. Again, thanks for all of your tips -- you're helping and influencing more people than you know, and I feel like I've hit the ground running thanks to you and others on this forum. Rock on!

Cheers,
Dave.

BrotherDave always has good info I must say. Interesting comment about recording bass on two tracks simultaneously for the tone you get.

I was in a Guitar Center a couple weeks ago but no Squier Jags to try, 34 or 30 inch scale. And the tattoo genius playing Metallica-esque riffs in the bass area was a real joy to listen to

After he left I did get to play a Squier Mustang. It was used and kind of beat but I did notice that the frets seemed pretty rough, raised and sticking out past the fretboard on the top side for the first 6 or 7 frets, not nice to play. I was surprised by that.

Love my Musicmasters and actually think the Squier is the better built of the two.

I have one that same color, and a little shorter. It also says Mustang on the head stock.
Plays real swell. Only concern I have is, the volume pot, it's very quiet until 8 or 9. Then it is very loud, without much difference from 8,9 and 10.
Will have to spend $8 - $12 on decent pot. No BIGGIE. Should I see about bigger wires to the pots as well?
Any advise from the Professionals would be enjoyed.

P.s. WI Kissfan Weren't you gonna post some pics of your show with your newly painted bass? :)

Yessir, I did post some in the Fender bass area, and there is also one in the Fender Lounge area under "show us your couch"

I love it, totally bright and one of a kind. And love that my son painted it. And he did the Grumpy bass and flag ones too.

Or here's my "family"......it's front and center.

Just standard guitar wire is fine. 22awg size. The cloth covered is really easy to work with as no stripping is required because you can just push the cloth back. It is a time saver. Be sure to get the correct value pot.

I've got the short-scale version, and I love it for noodling with headphones and my Mustang I amp. I traded up from a Squier Bronco short-scale.
The SS Jag was so much more comfortable to hold and to play (than the Bronco), especially with switching back and forth between 6-string guitar and bass. It's very light too, certainly lighter than my Les Paul, and maybe even the Strat.

Very interesting about the weight of the SS Jag. My regular scale Jag (in the initial post) is crazy-heavy (according to my NIST-callibrated scale). Glad you like your Jag. I still play mine just about every day (the good days, as I call them). Oxfan was correct in the second post of this thread, though, and I succumbed to a Rumble 200 v3 last Fall. I've got flats on the Jag, and I absolutely love the sound a playability of the combination. The neck on the Jag feels great. My wife and kids were awesome enough to get me a VM Precision V for Christmas. The low B is phenomenal, and the Precision V is definitely lighter than my Strat. I absolutely love it, but I'm leaning toward putting flats on it. Anyway, an update from me for which you didn't ask. Here's a little bass-rig-porn (which I've posted in another thread before) as a reward!

Keep rockin' that Squier Bass!

Cheers,
Dave.

I got out the digital kitchen scale, and here are the results of weighing my arsenal:

El Degas (mid'70s vintage) SG copy: 3773 g / 8.32 lbs
Epiphone Les Paul Studio: 3724 g / 8.21 lbs
Fender Standard Stratocaster: 3589 g / 7.91 lbs
Squier VM Jaguar Short Scale Bass: 2802 g / 6.18 lbs

I guess I wasn't just imagining it.
