Hi -

Can anyone tell me if the truss rod for the Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass (this one - http://www.fender.com/basses/jaguar/vintage-modified-jaguar-bass/ ) - is a single-action or a double action?

My bass has developed a back-bow, and I've loosened the truss rod quite a bit (+1 turn, now) without getting enough relief. Of course, it's out of warranty.....

Thanks in advance.

Truss rod need many small adjustments

Turn truss rod nut / Allen 1/10 turn at time. Wait one hour, and take some reading/ mesurements with feeler gauge 9 or 8 the fret , the fret with most gap. Capo on first fret . Press string last fret.

If not OK turn another 1/10 and turn wait 1 hour . Keep strings in tune .

When OK , wait 12 hours to be sure , you could have to turn a little bit .

Don't do this job too fast if you have no experience , TAKE your time. If you go too fast you will have up bow next week .

thanks, but I have been adjusting this for the last three weeks, and it feels like the truss rod nut just spins freely, as it is to the point where there is no resistance when I turn the truss nut at all.

Granted, I have not turned it more than one full turn, mostly because I am not sure if it is a single action or double action rod. I have tried to see if it is stuck by pressing in the center of the neck, but again' I don't want to use too much pressure for fear of breaking the neck.

Info: I have been doing my own bass maintenance for the last twenty years, read John Carruthers book on maintenance, rebuilt my main Jazz, etc. I have a pretty good idea of what I am doing.

If you don't feel any pression when you turn , do some more turn . There are no risk of damage until no pression.
it is probably double action truss rod . Single action is vintage type on truss rod nut is at the body side not peg head.

I'd bet it's a single action truss rod...but even if it isn't...

First option: Tune your bass up a whole step or so past regular pitch...leave it that way for 2 weeks. Slowly tune down to regular pitch...check the neck..go from there.

If that doesn't do it.....

Second option: Go out and get the heaviest and highest tension strings available. Change the strings one at a time..or the backbow will get worse. Tune to full pitch. Leave it for a full 24 hours.

If that doesn't work...tune those new strings up a half or whole step above 440...and leave it for a couple weeks. SLOWLY tune back to regular 440 afterwards(turn the tuners down just a bit for a full week until you're at regular pitch).

Do all of this very slowly...or you'll develope an "S" in the neck. There's nothing worse than that.

You can bet that if it is a Squire bass then it has a single action truss rod.

If you have a severe back-bow in the neck, you can also heat treat the neck.
Loosen the truss rod completely. It is not doing anything since the bass is back-bowed anyway.
You would have to remove the neck from the bass, clamp it so that it has a forward bow.
Heat it under a photography light with an incandescent bulb for 24 hours.
Then remove the light and clamps and reassemble the bass and check the neck for straightness. Tighten the truss rod as needed. Play your bass.
This worked for me.
