Maybe it's just the climate here or something, but I have had very few issues with bowed necks over many years in the same climate--minor tweaks needed to my Ibanez Iceman and my Les Paul copy.

But recently I have been looking at getting a fretless bass and have mostly found Fender (MIM) & Squier Jazz basses in the fretless category.

I like them, and ma considering them.

So far I have actually preferred the sound of the Squiers I've played.

However there is one issue with about 2/3's of the Squiers I've played have had bowed necks--nothing serious that a tweak won't take care of.
But I wonder if they have that tendency, and if I get a Squier I'll be doing neck adjustments more often than I have with any other bass or guitar.
Or is it just the climate and the stores have been lazy about setting them up.

Each store offered to tweak it if I bought it--but they won't do it just to hang it up at the store.

None of the MIM's had that issue--however I didn't like them as much--and they cost about twice as much as the Squier.

So, any experience with Squier basses & bowed necks?

I had a Classic Vibe 60's Precision that developed a twist in the neck. I took it back.

I'd look for a used Fender Special Run ash Jazz before anything else. Removing the frets isn't that hard. You could also find a used Classic Vibe Jazz and do the same modification. Buying used can lower the bow factor, with the wood having more time to adjust. Either of my suggestions is bettter than getting a Squier Modified Jazz(the one with the plastic fingerboard).

About the stores doing setups on their guitars...I'd rather they leave them be. Most of those guys know diddely about guitar or bass care.

I keep hearing this-and while a neck adjustment may be all that's needed--I'd rather not have to always do one, as it would be annoying, at best.

As for de-fretting a bass--I have no aptitude for that sort of thing, so it's not really an option.

As for stores doing set-ups--there's one that has a real good tech--he did a great job on an old Ibanez Strat style guitar for someone I know--made it playable.
I also know a couple of other guys who do a great job and I've picked up some stuff over the years from people and books (Such as Dan Erlewine books)
But I don't want to have to keep doing the adjustments--when my guitars have needed very little over the years.

There is a used Fender fretless bass I know about, but I need a bit more cash--hopefully nobody else will get it before that happens.

I have looked at non Fender fretless basses as well.

I like most Ibanez basses as well--but fretless J-Basses are the easiest to find.

But hanks for the response, and thanks to the people in the other thread as well.
