I have read a lot about how people buy Squier basses to mod them. I was curious about the hardware in the high end Fender bases and was wondering is it even possible to just replace all the hardware in an Affinity bass with the hardware found in the high end Fenders?

Where do you find out the information about Fender hardware? For example, the fender web page on the Vinatage '74 http://www.fender.com/basses/jazz-bass/ ... jazz-bass/ simply says "American Vintage '74 Jazz Bass® Single-Coil" for the pickups. So, if I were to slap those pickups on a Squier Affinity J Bass, would it suddenly sound like a high end Fender?

NO.

If you want a high end bass , better to buy one that you try and like . Invest ( to much ) money in a low budget guitar or bass make no sense.
You lost this money when resale and "cheap " wood will alway stay cheap with any good electronic.

A most of high end part are american " size " . Your bass need import "size " parts to fit and these parts are often low end.

A good used high end bass could cost close to your mod.

+1

USA Fenders are generally expensive with the Custom Shop models' prices being prohibitive for many budgets.

"You can put lipstick on a pig. But it is still a pig." (President Barrack Obama as a candidate.)

Hard to improve upon those words of wisdom, but would like to add that a MIM Fender is very receptive to mods. A 2006 or 2007 used isn't that much more money than a new Squier.

A relative of mine has an Affinity Stratocaster. I haven't seen one without any finish on the body..but it's quality American wood(3 piece alder). It's just a bit thinner than the usual is all.

The chunky neck is as good as any MIA I've seen, being quartersawn maple and having some very nice rosewood for a fingerboard, except for the frets..which are the kind that wear down fast.

Some good electronics could be added to make this a pro guitar. Those blue Squier Affinity's are a great buy.

Yes a Squier now is better than ever before, with the possible exceptions of the few USA made ones and some but not all of the Mexican ones. I think the ones out now are actually better sounding than ever. The Squier full scale Jaguar P/J basses just blow anything else in the price class away. They are such a clear winner in the price range that Yamaha and Ibanez are going to have to kick it up a notch on their entry level basses. I would have no problem gigging one of those Jaguars if they had a passive option built-in, but it is probably mod-able to do that for a couple of bucks. If anyone has done that I'd like to know the best way to do that with one switch.

+1 on that mod. I have that Bass. I have played at it through a couple thousand dollar rig & had it played, and it sounds amazing, but remember I have only first touched a bass less than two weeks ago. But I know what sounds good. :) Tom.
