Hey guys, what do you think about the SD Quaterpounders. That's what my CS Jazz came with and I'm satisfied with the way they sound.

Thanks,
Gary

linnin! Calm down! You're getting wild! If grho50 says they're SD's then they're SD's.

We need brotherdave to settle this. I just e-mailed him, now we wait.

Don't mind you questioning anything I say, but outright calling me a liar is going too far.
Normally I don't go this far to prove myself, but this is the internet and anyone can claim anything.

Below are the specs on the FCS bass I own. I'm also including a link to Sweetwater's web site page showing the same bass, except for the finish and the neck, where you can view the specs they provide. Just in case you want to further insult me by accusing me of doctoring the specs I posted.
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/JBassCS5RBCT/
I'll also add a picture of my bass that I took which shows the SD Quarterpounders along with a few of pics of me playing it at some of our gigs.

I got nothin'g else to say you, linnin.

I don't think he actually retired........it was just hard for him to find work after that one time when he got nervous and accidently "spotted" a big time producer's pants leg.

I would go with one of three pickup sets. 1. Seymour Duncan SJ53 Quarter Pound 5-String Jazz Bass Pickup set. 2. Wilde by Bill Lawrence J45 set. 3. Fender CS.

The Reason I put them in this order is ascending cost. The SD's will be more economical. They are mass produced so the quality is not relative to the low cost. If you like them in your CS bass you should like them in the Squier.

The Wilde's are sort of revolutionary for several reasons. First, the same pickup works on 4 or 5 string instruments perfectly and it also works on narrow 6 string basses. Second, they are sealed in Lucite resin so the coil will never break or short...ever. Third, they are air-gap design which is probably the last noiseless Jazz pickup Bill Lawrence will get around to doing. This means you can skip the shielding job, which I'd recommend on the other two sets of pickups. Fourth, They are not overly hot or overwound...however they are noticeably bassier than the CS pups will be, lacking the highest upper mids. I GUARANTEE nobody is going to say these pickups sound "thin."

The Fender CS are vintage wind full range single coils. They sound totally amazing but are not immune to RFI by any stretch of the imagination. The CS set's output will be a tad lower than the SD's you are familiar with, but they will have the same single coil bang, only not quite as much volume and will be more vintage correct. Exactly how much less volume I'm not sure but a tad less. The SD's are about the same wind but the large pole pieces yield increased sensitivity.

As for the pot setup, I'd use 250K's with any pickup set but the Wilde set. In the case of the Wilde set I'd recommend trying 500K pots first. That will make up some for the weakness in upper mids which is a common issue in all noiseless Jazz Bass pickups due the fact that any humbucking tends to kill upper mids. If your Squier bass has 250K's already and you are using the SD's or the FCS set then just use the stock 250K ones, if that is what they are. There is no tonal benefit from swapping a 250K Asian pot for a 250K CTS pot as far as I can tell. 250K is 250K. (Actually if labeled 250K they are probably between 220K and 280K but that is another story for another day.) Anyway if you swap mini-pots for CTS you may have to do some control cavity wood routing plus you'll for sure have to drill the control holes larger on the control plate too.

As for the tone cap in all cases I'd score a vintage ceramic disc cap for a vintage correct bite which costs about a dollar. The new Fender ceramics are not exactly the same as the vintage ones. Or if you want to go for a smoother sound that is richer use a MYLAR Orange Drop (NOT Poly) running about $3 or a Vitamin-Q type paper in oil cap which can run almost $20...but even a Soviet paper in oil Vitamin-Q type copy would be good and they are only about $5 or less. Good source for vintage caps is http://www.axegrinderz.com/

BUT, (notice it is a big but) part of the tone from that CS bass is from the superior woods used and no matter what you do the Squier isn't ever going to be exactly the same as the CS bass. You can throw $200 in upgrades at it and it will sound better, but it won't ever sound as stellar as the CS bass. The "making a silk purse out of a sow's ear" expression comes to mind. Still a pickup upgrade will be an improvement over the stock Asian ones, just don't expect the skies to open and see a rainbow appear with unicorns jumping over it. It will be more like a fair to partly cloudy day after a few dreary ones.

Also if you ever decide to sell the Squier the upgrades won't matter one iota in what you can get for it, so keep the original electronics and put them back in before selling it and then sell the upgraded electronics separately or you can keep the premium electronics for future project.

And Sweetwater has several proprietary models such as yours that differs from typical Custom Shop editions sold elsewhere. They sell more CS basses than most dealers, perhaps being one of the top CS bass dealers. Essentially Fender does CS Special Runs to Sweetwater's unique specifications while most shops dealing with a CS order can't get the things done by Fender that Sweetwater can since they'll order more multiple copies at a time.

Linnin, get a grip. It may help you to remember all those banished forum members that we lost in 2012. Perhaps we should do a PowerPoint presentation on them, sort of like they do at the Oscars?

Thanks brotherdave. 8)

As usual you provide us with great information. I'll put it to good use. I realize that I will not be able to match my FCS sound wise or playability wise either, but I think I'll be able to turn a decent Squier VM V bass into a pretty good one. It's already a comfortable bass to play. Just need to get a fuller, richer sound out of it.

I'm going with the SD 3's, a vintage ceramic tone cap, and I'll also copper shield everything while I have it apart.

Again thanks for the great info.

P.S. Let's give linnin a break. He read something that just didn't make any sense to him. I just ask that he tone it down a little, no name calling and ask a reasonable question next time.

Sorry about the unicorn incident. Hopefully by now you are able to sit without too much discomfort.

I have palyed the Squier at 2 gigs now since doing the mods. The bass plays great and is sounding good.

Here's a link to the thread showing the mods I did; http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=82450
