I've got the Squier pollished up, new Schaller strap locks installed and she's ready to go out on her first gig. We'll set up and do sound check this afternoon, so I'll know then if the stock pups will work for me or if I'll need to replace them. Other than a couple of small QC issues, this is one heck of a bass for the money!
The FCS will play the back up roll this weekend! :shock:

Looks like I'll be playing my FCS after all. The Squier plays very well but the sound is a little too thin. Just couldn't get it worked out. I guess the FCS has me spoiled.

Thinking about replacing the pups with CS 60's.

Anybody have any other ideas? :?

Spoiled Rotten is what you are, grho50! :lol:

Sell the Squire.

Get a 5-string G&L to compliment your Custom Shop Jazz. Big; delicious, punchy & meaty humbuckers on the G&L. Snarl; Growl, and Bark on the Jazz. Best of both worlds. Leo sure knew what he was doing. :wink:

I'll keep the Squier. She's really a nice bass. I'm just spoiled on the sound.

When I made my purchase it was a toss up between the Squier and the American Standard Precision V. I went with the Squier because this bass probably won't be played that often and I would rather have a $300 bass sitting around than an $1,250 bass.

Like I've stated, the Squier plays really nice, looks good and with an upgrade on the pups it should deliver the sound I want or at least get pretty close to it.

I'm leaning towards the CS 60's, but I am open for suggestions.

You bought a cheap piece of bass that sounds like it. Toss boring in the dumpster, and do something exciting! Rout it out and drop in some big block humbuckers! Don't settle for mediocrity, shoot on a wild paint job!

I think that the new pups will work out for you. My FSR Precision had some junk pups, which I swapped out for SPB-3's, they are incredibly powerful and almost emulate the Precision thump.Almost. If I had it to do over again, I'd get the Fenders.

When I play, it's always through a SansAmp Tech 21 Bassdriver, it makes up for the Squier's lack of output.

Have a Happy New Years Day!

oxfan;
I set up through a Zoom B2 - Tech 21 Bass Boost Chorus - SansAmp BDDI - then to the board. The first thing I checked with our sound man was the Squier's output signal to the board and he said he had a good strong signal.
I might could work with the Zoom to find what I want, but that's a tedious job that takes time. I have to work with it at home, then take the time to dial it in at whatever gig we're playing. I'm too lazy for all that. :oops: I have about 2 or 3 different sounds set up on the Zoom. The majority of the time I have it in bypass mode.
I use the Tech 21 Bass Boost Chorus because I like it better than the Zooms. I can easily dial in the chorus sound I like, which is just a touch to help fill the background on some songs without losing any quality or definition of my basic sound.
I use the SansAmp BDDI for the obvious reasons.
After 2 or 3 songs at sound check, between our sound guy and me we had dialed in what everyone thought was a pretty good sound. Then I pulled out the FCS and there was a huge difference. The FCS just filled the room, not volume wise, but it just delivers such a big sound. The Squier had no chance. :(

Now I look for 3 things in a bass. Sound - playability - and then looks. This Squier has all but the sound. I was able to set it up with a nice low action, the intonation set easily and has held (approx 2 weeks) and it's just a comfotable bass for me to play. I never was one that went for a natural finish, but after receiving the bass and seeing it first hand I have to admit it looks pretty nice. I've got nothing but compliments from others as well.

linnin;
I appreciate your suggestion and I completely understand what your saying, but I guess I'm just a little too conservative for that and rather than the looks of my bass causing excitment, I'd rather concentrate on my sound and playing to create a groove that people can feel and get excited about. Through the years I've learned that what looks hot today is often considered old fashion and out of style tomorrow.......a conservative, classic look will always be in stlye. :)

So oxfan and linnin, do you think those CS 60's would work or do you have another suggestion?
Oh yeah, what about the pots? Think I should change those as well? If so, any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any ideas you can give me.

If it was me, I'd use the CS 60's, just my opinion.

I definitely would change the pots as well as, the jack and cap. I'll try to get brotherdave involved. He's the guy you want to talk to.

Thanks oxfan.

Obviously, I can use all the help I can get. :lol:

Oh, I'm watching a set of CS 60's on ebay now. About 5 more hours and they're at $110 now. Free shipping and 100% feedback on the seller.

They'll work just fine. Be sure to shield your Squire while it's apart, and yes, do replace all the electronics including the jack & wiring with high quality USA made parts. It makes no sense to put in expensive high end p'ups and not follow through leaving in the cheap Chinese crap components. Consult Brother Dave for tone cap selection or just read the tone cap thread. Very informative, and crucial to good tone. :wink:

Most importantly, have fun doing it. :D

Thanks linnin.

I appreciate the help. What you said makes perfect sense.

P.S. Still high bidder at $110 on the ebay site. a little over 4 hours to go. We'll see how it goes when it gets down to the last few minutes.

Ok. I was out bid on the CS 60's, which was a really good thing because when I went to check to see if anyone else was bidding, only then did I notice they were for a 4 string bass. Boy did I feel stupid. :oops:

So the search continues.
