thanks ox..

I've read about that site.. and the problem is pickups are really limited here... I definitely not a fan of DiMarzios..

so my choices are like.. Fender Original 62, Custom Shop '60s, Tone Rider TRJ-1, Aguilar AG 4J-60 or 70, and Joe Barden... I dunno what to choose as they're all good..

Want better sound? Instal better pickups. Don't forget to ditch the cheapo controls and instal quality electronics. Shielding, don't forget the shielding.

linnin.. the problem is what pickup to choose..

Ahhhh...that's easy, the most expensive ones, of course!

Lindy Fralins are always a great choice. They're like $120 each.

Fender's own upgrade p'ups the "Vintage Jazz"

$200 a pair full retail MSRP

Fender's Custom Shop p'ups in my Am. Std. Jazz are the very best Jazz pickups I've ever heard in my life! I $@!& you not.

i visited a guitar shop and tried Squier deluxe Active Jazz V, plugged in on a Fender Rumble 150... I'd say i was blown away when i slapped... found the pickups to be burpy.. i like that bridge pickup growl...
but these never sounds so vintage.. looking at this to consider as well... If only this bass has a passive - active switch..

Although I agree that better quality pups can certainly improve sound, ultimately it is the player that generates the music coming out of the bass. The best thing you can do to improve your sound...play. Keep playing. Play some more. Then play again.

There will come a time when you will recognize that it is no longer the instrument that makes the most difference. Play.

Couldn't agree with you more. the player makes the difference and experience is the best teacher.

Hopefully new bass guitarists will read these posts and realize that it's not the bass, it's the player.

If i would have realized that, I'd have saved a bunch of money and wouldn't have a stable now. :D

come to think of it... You guys are right..

I've read a lot of reviews, threads discussing about wood tones... and saying how "bad" agathis really is... but then again, when I had the chance to play with a certain instrument.. (they sounded pretty good) i.e the Deluxe active jazz v... it sounded pretty good, not that original fender goodness... but good... probably the VMs may require a little EQing ang string swapping as well..

Mine's perfect, tone and playing-wise. It's just heavier than a ton of bricks...

I know this is an old thread, but.......

I purchased a Squier VM 5 last December to use as a backup. I replaced all the electronics and shielded the cavities. Here's a link to the mods I did; http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=82450

IMO the bass still doesn't sound or play as well as my American Standard P5 or my FCS Jazz 5, but it does sound good and really is a good playing bass. I really like the feel of the neck.

I believe for the money (including the cost of the mods) it's the best 5'er I own. My Am Stnd cost almost 3 times as much and my FCS cost almost 10 times as much. No way they play or sound that much better. For the record......my Am Stnd P 5 is my favorite. Doesn't play quite as easy as my FCS, but I love the sound of the passive P bass and the B string sound is outstanding.

I used the Squier tonight at rehearsal and had alot of fun playing it. I have used it on a few gigs as well. Now we are just an average weekend band, but our sound man, who has ran sound for a few big name acts, said that if you didn't go up and read the decal on the headstock you would swear it's a real Fender.
