I am looking at a Squire Pro Tone series 5 string Precision bass at a local pawn shop. I would like to hear from anybody who owns one, or who has played one. It is a nice looking bass, in excellent condition. It seems to be very well made, from 1996-98.
Let me know if you have had experience with these Pro Tone series guitars. Thanks!!

It's a wonderful bass in my opinion. The only thing about it is that i would first off change the pickups, because normally pickups don't come good on a bass that cheap. ^^. I personally like the sunburst color and the mahogony pick guard. But all of them are beautiful. ^^.

I'm with Hannah, but I would suggest you play it for a while before you decide to ditch the pups: one of the reasons those ProTone guitars are sought after is the upgraded electronics (upgraded from a stock Squier, that is). It might be awesome just the way it is!

I've been trying to get info on these Pro Tone basses. From what I gather on the net, they are da bomb when it comes to older Squiers - as is. No upgrade needed, except making sure all the soldering is good to go, it is an older gear after all. Need to remember tho, I like upgrading and modifying my basses

Just noticed - I'm @ 333 post, does that mean I'm half a devil...lol, I know I'm stupid. :D

I picked up a Squire P-Bass Special 5-string and it rocks! Put a set of flatwounds on it and you've got a thundering 5-string blues or rock bass that plays pretty darn good (after proper set up of course) for under $300! (The stock strings need changing as soon as possible.) The deep, warm tone on this thing, especially the low B, was a nice surprise!

If slapping is your thing, however, try one of these Squire 5-string Jazz basses with active electronics:

It's still just $300 and for the money is a really nice bass.

Well, technically I bought this bass a few months back, but only recently started to play it much after putting on some D'Addario Chromes flatwounds. The stock strings it came with were pretty cheap and uninspiring, but with the Chromes -- oh my! Now it's got tone. And unlike the Ricky, this one only set me back $250 so my wife really didn't bat an eye.
