Hi Everyone and Thanks For Checking This Out! If you've got some advice to offer - could I ask you to offer it quickly? I'm on a purchasing deadline!!!

Here's the brief backstory. I have a 15-year old daughter who has been playing guitar for just about 2-1/2 years. She took to it, practiced like crazy and now she's already leading the advanced rock band at her music school (they perform in public fairly regularly). She loves grunge bands and the "heavier" side of music (yes, there's hope for the future!). I tell you all this not to brag because I realize there's thousands and thousands of kids like this playing Eruption on every street corner. She just LOVES music and seems to have a deeper understanding of it on some soulful level.

All along she's played my Rickenbacker Bass as a "side instrument" (she loves it) but now she has reason to sub on bass with one of the two bands she's in. She's on the smaller side physically and does not have large hands. My Rickenbacker is mint and I just can't handle the stress of her taking it out to weird gigs - not knowing if it will survive. I need to buy her a bass immediately for some upcoming shows. WE ARE NOT RICH and I need to find something in a narrow price range (under $200 is perfect). Claire has a Squier Jagmaster and its quite nice and a good value. The basses that Squier now offers are confusing to me - can you help me make this decision?

Should I get one of the Short Scale Jaguar Bass Guitars (now at $154.99 free shipping)?
Is there a disadvantage to the Short Scale that she will regret later?
Should I get one of the Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Guitars (standard scale) for $175.00?
Is there a different Squier model bass that I should be considering?

THANKS - ANY AND ALL ADVICE IS WELCOME!!!!!

I have 3 short scale basses because I also "vertically challenged" and don't have particularly large hands. I've never found a time where I regretted having a short scale over a longer bass, if she likes the bass she'll bond with it. The amp can make a huge difference too I guess.

First, totally off topic for this Fender site (sorry), but one of my short's is a SX Jazz Bass and it is WONDERFUL. Great action, stays in tune with the only drawback being the output is somewhat low, but again an amp can adjust for that. I could change out the pickups I suppose but I just adjust for it and it's all good. The downside to those is the new "ursa" style headstocks are pretty horrid looking IMO, so you 'd have to shop around to find a good used one.

My other two short's are both Musicmasters, one Fender and one Squier. First off the Squier is a much better build. The stock bass four magnet pickup is great where as the Fender I had to replace the original Strat pickup with a Seymour Duncan four pole'r. The Squier neck is less bulky and the bridge has "string though body" design. They are both very punchy, mellow and suit my needs in a classic rock/blues rock. The Squier also has a headstock painted to match the body which looks great, looks matter a little right?

Anyway, I would highly recommend any of the new Squiers, Mustang/Jaquar etc over the Bronco. The Broncos I've seen are kind of an "inexpensive" build to be kind. The prices are good on these Squiers and they come in some cool colors she might like.

Good luck.

For reference sake, here's my shorties..........

As long as she doesn't have a need to tune the bass much lower than standard pitch or drop D, then the short scale shouldn't be a problem, and might even make it more comfy to play. If she wants to down-tune a short scale bass, you'll be looking at using the low 4 strings out of a 5 string set, and probably paying for a setup to accomodate the larger strings.

As for the normal scale, full size models... I'm 6'1", and my Jazz bass feels pretty big. I imagine it would swallow a 14 year old girl... I'd think short scale would be the way to go for her, but that's just my 2 cents.

Thank you for your kind responses - all were helpful. For what it's worth, I decided to go for the Squier by Fender Modified Vintage Jaguar Bass Short-Scale for $154.99 (no tax, no shipping).

Weird think was there wasn't a stitch of paperwork with the instrument - not even a receipt (I bought it through amazon.com). Anybody else hear about this?

Thanks a million!

Can't say much about the paperwork angle. Very cool purchase though, hope she likes it, photos are always appreciated. 8)
