This neck must have been done on a Friday afternoon... I can't adjust the action on this thing.. I found others in other forums have the same problem as I do. I hope FENDER can help me out here. It's as if I just gave Fender my 300 dollars in exchange for CRAP. Its unplayable!

I like mine :D No problems at all. You can adjust truss rod and string height . What more is to desire? Magic stick? Perhaps you ,as you said, got one from an unfortunate production? Then you should make a complaint to the dealer.....

You know the shop should at least make the bass playable before presenting it to a customer or putting it up in the show room right? This happens to more basses than we know. I've picked up a MIA JBass with bad fret wire and bowed neck, with bad action - good job GC! The stock can sit somewhere hot, then shipped to somewhere cold, vice versa. Every spring I have to adjust the neck on my basses a little. I do live in a very cold climate tho.

GC is the worst. Not saying these basses aren't crap, but as you pointed out. I've played some basses that I know were well made but were basically ripped out of the box and tossed on a wall. One was a Roadworn Jazz Bass that was gorgeous and had a super sweet broken in neck. However, the strings were flat to the frets. You couldn't do anything with it. It was a shame, but I'll be damned if I'm going to set up a bass for them just so I can see if it's worth buying.

I'd say getting a decent Squier is a crapshoot to begin with. Even standing at the end of the production line. Getting one shipped, and not set up and maybe a little bit of finishes can make a top notch bass seem like a dog. It can make a low end bass a useless piece of crap. I only got to GC if there's a specific model I want to try and no locally own shops carry one. Even then, I know the bass isn't getting a fair shake because it won't be taken care of by the staff.

You said it all. GC has gotten so bad, i do the same as you, I'll go there to try something, if I need something . I'll buy online as there are no good independent music stores close.

As far as Squiers, i have a VM Modified Jazz that I really like. i played six before i bought and all were decent, not as good as my Fenders, but as a backup it's great. Pickups are a little weak but the maple body has great tone.

King Of Pain, you back now? I agree with the GC stuff. I only go there now when I need to try something out. My local store is not a Gibson/Epi dealer, so GC to try out the guitar(s ).

It's tough, and I really feel bad for some of these instruments. There are perfectly fine instruments gathering dust on the walls in GC's all over this country. Simply passed over because the people paid to maintain the store don't put the time in to care for them.

I may be making a trip this Friday out to a regional GC. It depends on if I can find one with a Roadworn 50's P in stock. There have been times when I just wanted to grab my tools and spend an entire day setting up the bass room in the Syracuse GC. It's been awhile since I've been up there, but it used to be atrocious.

Patience is critical when a large truss rod adjustment has to be made. I recently received a new MIM Geddy Lee that had zero tension on the truss rod and of course the neck looked like a banana at tension.

Large neck adjustments should be done in very small increments and the bass should be allowed time to settle in between adjustments. I never go more than about a quarter turn or so at a time on the truss rod, then tune to. Pitch, play a little, check tune, check neck relief.
I usually will let the bass rest for a day before adjusting again.

Also if your climate has large changes regularly you will find neck adjustments are a fairly common procedure. (Which is why I'm not a huge fan of the truss rod nut at the neck heel)

If you try to do too large an adjustment in one go you can damage the truss rod, nut, neck or any combination.

FWIW the relief on my GED was MORE than my largest feel gauge at 0.025" and I got it down to where I like mine at 0.011" over the course of about 4 days. Probably could have been done on day three, but I was in no hurry and I would rather give the bass the extra tme to acclimate itself to my environment.

One-quarter turn of the truss rod nut per 24 hrs is a good rule. Let it settle in and re-check.

How many of you who are finding basses way out of adjustment at Guitar Center bother to complain about it?

I saw nearly an entire staff of our local GC replaced due to some customer complaints.

I still find basses out of adjustment, but no body is refusing to wait on us older guys now.

Tell them you want to see the Squires set up and they will probably comply if they can do the work. Oh and I can tell you that I have seen far worse for lots more money than the necks on squire basses. I think Squires are a damn good value for the money, esp the Classic vibe instruments.

Hmm, I somehow missed this thread--it's kind of hat I was looking for based on another I started--don't know how I missed it...

Thanks for the answers--I was wondering about their necks.

My Squier VM Jaguar Special is setup about perfect. I ordered one in Sunburst and my local small guitar store did a fantastic job on it. This is a low cost instrument, but it doesn't show in the workmanship. I haven't been in a GC in years...battle of the drummers made it painful to be in the closest store.

The problem with our local GC was that they sourced out their set-up and repair dept. to an outside shop that moved into a spot in the store. They were never there, and their prices were outrageous. Eventually that faded out and GC has now taken the reigns back and in all honesty things have improved there. But no,...they don't supertweak anything unless you buy it. You can get the strings changed and a half decent set-up if you talk them into it. Just keep in mind their job will never be as good as that dedicated specialist you've come accustomed to.
