I sat in on bass at my church for a friend who was out of town. I'm not a bass player so used a Squier loaner.

I'm in the habit of turning down the volume between songs and when I did this with the bass I heard a nasty hum/buzz come from the amp. It turned out what I thought was a volume control (the control closest to the strings) was a tone control and I had turned up the treble. The middle control and the control closest to the instrument jack didn't adjust the volume either.

I was surprised to find that there was no volume control on this Squier bass. Is this normal or is something wrong with the wiring on that bass?

Cheers,

It is possible you were only turning down one pickup at a time, if it was a Jazz bass... they have separate volumes for each pickup, and no selector switch... so you have to turn BOTH down to kill the output. (Those would be the two farthest from the output jack, and the last one closest to the jack is the tone control.) Turning down one or the other pickup would cause a loud hum, as the pickups are single coil. I have this issue with my Vintage Mod '70's Jazz bass, and as a guitarist who plays predominantly PRS guitars, it's a bit of an adjustment to learn to make, LOL...

My guess is that's what was going on, unless for some reason the bass had been re-wired. That's always a possibility... however it's unlikely that someone would remove all volume controls in favor of eq knobs. But, stranger things have been known to happen...
