There's my Squier down there in the pic...it's an '04 special, ya know that one with the chrome pg...but its got a red one now. anyways...would a better set of pickups help with sustain? cos it just ...ok it sucks.

I don't expect it to sound as looooooooong as my warwick does, cos that thing is on it's own level. I've actually timed the sustain....lol...

But there's barely any sustain on the Squier. I love that thing, just wish it rang a little more.

...think it needs a thumb rest ....the corners of the P p'ups ...ouchie

The one common complaint concerning Squier's s, pickups. New pickups will definitely make a difference. I put SPB-3's on my Precision, they are incredible. There are a lot of choices out there, good luck.

A lot of factors go into sustain. Bridge, strings, and you're right, pick up. Another thing most bassist don't care about too much, a long sustain...the lead guitarist likes these more than we do ;) Sustain is good, but not so important in our instrument is it?

As mentioned many factors impact sustain.

Firstly, WOOD. If your wood isn't resonant it will not support the vibration of the string and can actually suck the tone right out of it like rubber deadens vibration. A bad piece of wood and there is little you can do.

If the wood is good, you can increase sustain by using roundwound stainless strings like Rotosound Swingbass, by installing a brass nut or bone nut and by installing a high mass bridge. But if the wood is bad in the first place then you can do all this and still have a dull thud. They don't call it TONEWOOD for nothing.
