I want to start learning bass and was thinking of getting a Squier Affenity Bass. How do you find the quality of them?

I think they are decent basses,IMO.
I purchased an Affinity V a few years back and it is a nice playing and sounding bass. I did a couple of mods like add an Audere JZ3 Preamp. I have to stress that the reason I added the JZ3 was for the added EQ and extra power. The stock pickup config is adequate and should serve you well.
Squire basses have come a very long way in the past 5 years or so..I also own a Vintage Modified Jazz Bass Fretless (which I gig with a lot) and it is one of my favorite basses.

Well I bought one last night. Very happy with it so far. The build quality is far better then I thought.
