hi guys, up until about 3 hours ago, i was told that my new bass was a fender made in USA from about 1982. i felt that it was weird that my instrument wouldnt have a serial number, so i posted photos here. welp, looks like what i have is an early japan squier where someone replaced a headstock decal with a 70's fender P-bass decal. arrrgh...

at least i'm getting somewhere in that the PB-331 stamped in the neck pocket was the model number for squier basses.

what i would like is for a squier guru to let me know as much as possible about this bass as i can learn! i'm dying not knowing exactly what i own now. is this a desirable bass to own? it plays pretty nicely, so at least i've got that going for me.

Your bass looks consistent with the early Squire Precision basses that came out in 1981-82 time frame . They had the Slab finger boards and they are very nice instruments. So the guy you bought it from bought a fake decal online and put it on after removing the original Squire logo!
These instruments have appreciated in value because they are very nice basses.

I remember teaching bass when these came out and a student showed up with one and I couldn't believe how close it was to my 1959 Precision bass.

I hope that you enjoy playing it.

Agreed. Very well made basses. Enjoy!

You got an 80's MIJ Squier! That's some luck there buddy, they are going up in price now. Those early MIJ Squiers were the big deal, Asia price (yen was low compared to the US$ back then) and MIA craftsmanship (except done by the Japanese not CA). I have an '89 MIJ Fender that was/is better than the MIA from the same era.
