Hey, I'm new to the forum, and pretty new to the bass. After recently acquiring a nice Squier Vintage Modified J-Bass (Maple fretboard), I've been looking into some mods and quality raising things.

Some questions for the experts out there...

Can I replace the Squier's knobs with the Fender original Jazz Bass knobs? The thing would look SO much better, and the white line position markers would make getting different tones easier and more consistent.

Also, about the Fender Jazz/Precision bass thumbrest. In the pictures I've seen, it's closer to the neck pickup. Can it be moved closer to the bridge pickup? I tend to play over the bridge pickup, for the sound difference.

EDIT: Went and figured out bridge vs. neck.

Finally, what else would you guys recommend I replace? My goal is to upgrade to as close to a true Fender as I can, without spending a TON of money.

Any help and answers are appreciated.

EDIT #2: Another question. Humidification - is just getting a humidifier in the room where I keep my instruments good?

Humidification? Don't bother, If you are comfortable, then so should be the bass. The biggest trouble - and it hasn't been for me in the least - is a severe change in temperature from a snowy day to the inside of a venue and back into the snow to home. But that's really a surface-cracking problem mostly.

The mods I've done to my VM-Jazz is as follows:::

Hi. The Fender knobs should work if you have solid shaft pots. I can understand wanting to use them for the marker lines.

The biggest sound improvements would mean new pickups and a better tone cap. Pickups can run into money. The Fender are really good and there are a couple of choices there. So are Seymour Duncan and again there are choices. Those are probably the two most popular brands. Both brands are mass produced so the quality this there but the cost remains quite moderate compared to custom pickups which are not much better. Another good affordable pickup option I'd suggest considering is a set of WILDE pickups by Bill Lawrence.

Tone cap selection would depend on what tone you are seeking. For a 60's edge use a ceramic disc for example. It is really amazing what a tone cap can do to change tonal character.

Unless the hardware is broken or malfunctioning there is no need to replace it.
